“Yes, Madison will sleep with me, too. Not only will she be your mom, she’ll also be my wife.”

“Where will she sleep? You don’t have a couch for her in your room,” Michael said.

“She’ll sleep in my bed with me, okay?”

“Okay. Can we still come to your bed in the morning on weekends?”

“You sure can,” Madison blurted before Rick tried to explain he’d rather have them stay quietly in their room.

“Good. We’ll all kiss a lot and sleep in your bed, Daddy,” Michael said with an adorable smile.

“Yes, we will.” Madison pulled the boys into her arms and hugged them, hoping that one day she could give them a sister or two.

They spent the evening on the boat and enjoyed their promising present.

Chapter Twenty

The next day, Heron called with more news. The infamous article had been republished in the Lexington Town, and the press had hunted Congressman Randall for a statement. Heron asked Rick to watch the Lexington news on the Internet. “Look at the congressman’s reaction.”

“These are dirty lies, nasty gossip intended to destroy my family and ruin my career,” the congressman fumed. “I’ll not sit idly by and let my enemies have a field day at my expense.”

“Would you be willing to undergo a paternity test?” a reporter shouted from the crowd holding mikes.

“By all means. We’ll have it today. These false allegations have greatly upset my wife and my son.”

“What about the picture of your wife and Rick Lambert kissing? They were high school sweethearts, weren’t they? Aren’t you worried about Lambert snatching her away?”

“Absolutely not. Lambert took advantage of Chloe’s surprise when they unexpectedly came face to face at a local party in Fort Lauderdale. He kissed her, but she treated him like an old friend. No big deal.” Ben smiled indulgently. “Lambert was my friend, too. I wouldn’t mind hugging him after so many years.”

“Would you ask him for a political contribution?”

Randall laughed. “By all means, I’m sure he’d be happy to see his old pal succeed in his campaign.”

Rick snorted. “A contribution to his political campaign? Over my dead body.”

“We’ll let him tangle himself in his own web of lies,” Heron decided on his next call. “We’ll be in touch.”

Meanwhile, life continued in the Lambert household.

True to her word, Madison moved some of her clothes to his vast walk-in closet, and Rick drove her to the airport for her nextflight.

Since the children were on vacation, he spent a lot of time at home and refused to meet the lawyers at their office. “I can’t leave my children with their nanny too often.”

“I’m on my way with Brian,” Heron declared.

He received them in his office overlooking the patio and Intracoastal.

“This beats our view.” Obviously in a good mood, Heron laughed.

“Give me the news.”

“The paternity test was positive. Jason is really Ben’s son. We checked the boy’s date of birth. Six months after Ben and Chloe married which means—”

“Ah.” Rick punched his desk. “If Chloe was pregnant withhisbaby, it proves that he was the one in her room that night, the one who raped her.”

“It’s a good assumption, but not proof. Ben could have slept with her later. We can’t rush to conclusions yet. But we’re counterattacking. You’ll be suing Mr. Powell for defamation.”

“Powell? Why not Ben?”
