“Why, Sofie.” He stroked his lips up her inner arm, leaving behind a trail of fire. “I didn’t know you cared.”

Sofie shivered, dazed by the melting desire that threatened to drown her. Jinn were masters of seduction. It was rumored that a full-blooded jinn could manipulate any demon with desire.

But Sofie didn’t believe he was using his power on her. This wasn’t magic. It was the raw lust of a female who’d forgotten the pleasures the touch of a male could offer. Or maybe there’d never been another male who had managed to penetrate her defenses. At least not in a way to stir her deepest desires.

Her eyes closed as she allowed herself to briefly savor that intoxicating sensation, then the crack of lightning striking a nearby tree had her yanking her arm from his light grasp.

“I don’t care,” she informed him, turning her head to gaze out the opening of the cave. Ryshi had a unique ability to distract her. It was…aggravating. “But I’ll be stuck here if you die.”

“And you would miss me.”

“Hush.” She held up a hand, tilting her head to the side. “I’m trying to listen.”

“Listen to what?”

“The pattern.”

Ryshi pressed against her as he leaned toward the opening. “The pattern of what?”

Sofie refused to give him the satisfaction of shoving him away. Or at least that’s what she told herself as his warmth wrapped around her and his scent seeped into her skin.

“The lightning,” she said, keeping her gaze trained on the flashing bolts.

“There’s a pattern?”

“You said yourself that the spell repeats itself over and over. If you’re right, then there has to be a pattern.”

“Of course.” She didn’t need to see his expression to sense his startled approval. “Very clever.”

She frowned, annoyed by her surge of pleasure at his admiration. “It will take a few minutes to memorize it.”

“I’m in no hurry.” He turned to lean his back against the side of the cave, stretching out his legs. “Plus, this gives us an opportunity to become better acquainted. Tell me about yourself.”

Sofie clenched her hands. His touch might be intoxicating, but there was no way in hell she was discussing her past. Not with anyone.

“Do you always talk this much?”

“I’m interested in you.” There was a brief pause. “And honestly, I haven’t had a decent conversation in a decade.”

“Neither have I.” She silently counted between the flashes of lightning. “It’s been fabulous.”

Ryshi sucked in a sharp breath at her blunt honesty. “You don’t like vampires?”

“I prefer my own company.”

“Why?”

“Because I have the opportunity to think without constant interruptions,” she snapped. It wasn’t entirely a lie. She did prefer the quiet. But that wasn’t the true reason she avoided other vampires. “Something I could use right now.”

He ignored her less than subtle reprimand. “The world has become a crowded place. How do you avoid interruptions? Do you have a lair in the Fortress of Solitude?”

Her lips twitched. Despite her isolation, she did have a computer and access to modern technology and pop culture. It was imperative to be able to blend with the humans. They were her food source, after all. Plus, she liked watching movies on occasion. And Superman was one of her favorites. He was a creature who hid behind a mask, accepting that the truth of his identity was his greatest weakness.

“That’s a good description.”

“And you never get bored?”

“Never.”
