She sent him a frown of frustration as the sound of pounding footsteps echoed through the air and the scent of damp fur made Ryshi’s nose wrinkle in distaste.

“There’s no need. I can deal with them.” Inga interrupted their battle of wills, an unmistakable anticipation shimmering in her blue eyes.

She was clearly pissed at being trapped in the labyrinth and eager to have some revenge.

She was in the process of lifting the Tryshu when there was a warning tingle of magic before a female appeared as if being created out of thin air. At first it was impossible to make out anything beyond the glowing halo that surrounded her, but at last Ryshi could see golden hair and soft curves that were hidden by a silver toga.

“Halt!” the mysterious female commanded, lifting her hands.

Magic thundered through the air and Ryshi found himself frozen in place.

“I can’t move,” Sofie rasped, her features tense as if she was straining to free herself.

“Just relax,” he warned.

“Do you recognize her?”

“Gaia,” Ryshi said, watching as the goddess turned toward the minotaurs, bringing them to a halt with a sharp gesture of her hand. Then, wiggling her fingers, she lifted the largest minotaur off the ground, floating him forward before dumping him on the grass in front of her. “And she doesn’t look happy.”

The male pressed his horns to the ground, nearly losing the crown he had stuck on his head.

“Blessed Mother,” he rasped.

“What’s the meaning of this?” Gaia demanded.

The male cautiously lifted his head, staring at the goddess with a wary expression. “The meaning of what, Mother?”

“That.” Gaia pointed toward the large opening in the sky.

“A perversion.” The minotaur turned his head to glare toward Levet, who was blessedly silent for once. “We captured the gargoyle to close the hole, but he escaped.”

Gaia appeared genuinely confused. “How could a gargoyle repair my magic?”

“The seer—”

“Sees the future, not the truth,” the goddess sharply interrupted.

The male licked his lips, as if realizing things weren’t going his way. “We were lost without you, Mother.”

“Where is Stavros?”

“He…” There was more lip licking. And a drop of sweat trickled down the male’s forehead.

Gaia’s power pulsed through the air. “Tell me.”

“He was banished.”

“Why?”

“He insisted we open our homeland to invaders.” A pleading whine entered the male’s voice, his arrogance starting to crack beneath Gaia’s fierce glare. “I had to protect your people.”

“Protect.” Gaia glanced around, a hint of disgust twisting her impossibly beautiful features. “You have imprisoned them.”

“No.”

“Look at them.” She waved a hand toward the herd, who huddled together in fear. “You’ve taken the paradise I created and jealously guarded it until it began to decay.”

“You promised us that the labyrinth was created to keep out the unworthy,” the male desperately reminded her.
