“Jesus! Get your mind out of the gutter for a half a second. No I didn’t get laid. Ha!” Viviana had every intention of telling Candy about Chris from the app, but she was going to drag it out a little bit for her own amusement anyway.

“Something’s up though. I can tell.” Candy scrutinized Vivian from head to toe. “I saw you like twelve hours ago, but something is definitely up. Just tell me!”

“Okay, okay. So, I matched with someone on the app, and as promised, I even sent the first message.” Viviana was super proud of herself. While she absolutely considered herself a strong, independent woman and all that jazz, she also believed in certain traditional roles men and women play in relationships, and she wanted to be pursued just as much as she wanted to take care of herself. Part of her thought finding the balance between those two was why she had such a hard time meeting someone.

“Get out!” Candy exclaimed.

“No lie. We chatted a bit last night, and I mean I don’t know a whole lot about him yet, but he was not trying to get naked pictures, didn’t send a dick pic, asked me about myself a bit . . . he was perfectly . . .normal.”

Candy laughed. “Normal is good. So, show me!”

Viviana pulled her phone out and showed Candy the pictures of Chris from his profile. She saw a new message notification from him but didn’t open it. She wanted to keep their conversation private for the time being, but she felt her heart rate increase a bit knowing he’d reached out already so early in the morning. She swiped through his pictures, showing Candy, and grinning.

“Ooh girl, he’s hot. What’s he do? It says ‘works for the government’ which we know could mean anything,” she said.

“He told me he’s in law enforcement. So he must be a federal agent of some kind. You know every single branch of Homeland Security is here, so it could be any of them,” Viviana replied.

“A big boy job. Excellent. That means he can afford to take you on a proper date. Unlike you know who.” Candy pursed her lips.

“Yeah, well what’s his name is a thing of the past, right? I’m moving on. Finally. Like I said, I don’t know a lot about him yet, but we did already talk about getting together. Maybe Top Golf or something. I’d rather do some kind of an activity than have the pressure of dinner or something. Plus, Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and that is so much stupid pressure for something new . . .” Viviana pondered asking Chris if he wanted to meet up briefly for coffee or something like that instead of a real date.

Candy laughed. “Yeah, that could be cool. But wait and make him ask you out. You made the first move, and that was exactly what was needed for you, but he still has a job to do. Don’t go planning everything else out. See if he suggests something, or if he drags this out beyond Valentine’s Day, which yes, I get is kind of a dumb holiday, but it exists nonetheless, and also offers dudes a lot of suggestions and ideas out there for shit to do. He can figure something out.”

“You’re right.”

The girls chatted a bit more then parted ways to check on their patients. Viviana loved working at the hospital, and while it could be challenging at times, she wasn’t in the ER or a wing with a ton of emergencies. She was able to get to know her patients who were recovering from surgeries, and other small medical issues. She’d done some of her practicals in the ER, and other in intensive care, and she felt like there were plenty of nurses who got juiced by the constant up and down of the care needed in those areas of the hospital. She enjoyed checking in on her patients, administering the meds they needed, and helping them be comfortable. She wasn’t the kind of person who needed the excitement of nonstop emergencies in her day.

She’d gotten caught up talking to a fifteen-year-old girl who broke her arm playing softball and her mother when she realized she hadn’t checked the message from Chris. Another smile formed on her face, and when she left the teen’s hospital room, she pulled her phone from her pocket to check her messages.

Chris C.: How is my favorite nurse this morning?

Viviana chuckled. It had been a couple hours since the message came through, so she didn’t know if he’d see her reply any time soon, but she hoped he would.

Viviana R.: Haha

Viviana R.: Do you even know any other nurses?

Chris C.: There you are! Sure I do.

Chris C.: Okay, maybe not, but you’re still my favorite one either way lol

Viviana R.: I’ll take it lol

Viviana R.: I’m doing well today, how are you? Are you working today?

Chris C.: I am working. I’m good. Just chilling in my truck at the moment.

Viviana R.: So, what, like a speed trap?

Chris hadn’t said what kind of law enforcement he was, so she figured she’d dig a little deeper.

Chris C.: LOL, no. I work for CBP. Right now, we’re stationed all along the border highway, so it’s my turn to babysit the highway. PD is responsible for speeders, they’re not my problem

Viviana R.: Oh, okay. That makes sense. Do you like it?

Chris C.: Hmm . . . that’s a complicated question. Sometimes? Do you like being a nurse?

Viviana R.: You’ll have to explain ‘sometimes’ to me. I do like being a nurse. It’s pretty quiet today. I don’t work in the ER or anything, so my job doesn’t get too wild and I like it like that. I prefer to keep the excitement out of the hospital haha
