“What? Don’t tell me you aren’t having any fun,” he replied.

My eyes nearly fell out of my head. “I can barely make the snowballs fast enough, let alone have the chance to throw them at you and make contact. I’m so bad at this.”

At my words, a disappointed look washed over Jack’s face. Then, he said, “Alright, how about this? I’ll give you three free shots at me. I won’t run or hide, and I promise not to throw anything at you.”

“You’re going to give me three free shots?” I asked.

He smiled and dipped his chin.

My eyes dropped to the snowball he still had in his hand. Jerking my chin in that direction, I pressed, “What are you going to do with that?”

Jack looked down at the snowball in his hand and assessed it. He brought his attention back to my face and lifted his arm. Holding the snowball out to me, he declared, “It’s yours.”

“You’re going to give it to me to use on you?” I questioned him.

“Yes.”

“Are you sure you aren’t just saying that to get me to come out from behind this tree? I bet the minute I do, you’ll take your shot and blast me in the face,” I reasoned.

He tipped his head to the side, looking concerned. “First of all, even if I was lying to you and intended to throw this snowball at you, I’d never throw it directly at your face.”

Maybe it was the look on his face or the sound of his voice that made it happen, but I knew I believed every word that just came out of his mouth.

Jack didn’t wait for me to respond and added, “But beyond that, you should know that if I tell you I’m going to do something, I’ll stick to my word.”

At that, I wasn’t going to hold myself back.

I stepped out from behind the tree, moved in his direction, and came to a stop right in front of him. My eyes lingered on his handsome face for a moment before they dropped to his extended hand. I carefully plucked the snowball from his palm and rasped, “Thanks, Jack.”

“You’re welcome, Dakota.”

I loved the sound of his voice. Loved it.

Doing my best to ignore how much it affected me to hear him say my name like that, I took a few steps backward, but I never took my eyes off of him. When I finally stopped, I confirmed, “Three shots?”

“Three shots,” he repeated.

Jack was offering himself up. He was just going to stand there while I did my best to attack him with three snowballs.

Someone else might not have taken advantage of the situation, but I was. I intended to take full advantage of his offer.

So, placing two snowballs by my feet, I prepared for the first throw.

The moment it left my hands, I watched as it whizzed just past his shoulder.

“Are you kidding me?” I scoffed.

Jack started laughing.

I picked up the second snowball and decided it was probably better to aim for somewhere in the middle. I’d have a better chance at hitting him.

I wound up, tossed the snowball, and watched as Jack stepped to the side just so the snowball would touch his leg.

“This is embarrassing,” I mumbled.

“You hit me that time,” he pointed out.

I rolled my eyes. “Only because you stepped in the way of the snowball.”
