Jack did not stop.

Jack groaned again, drove in harder and deeper, and sent me over the edge. Sparks of pleasure shot through my body, my limbs tightening around him.

And the next thing I knew, Jack buried his face in my neck as he found his own release.

We stayed like that, my body pinned between his and the front door, until we both managed to regain control of our breathing.

Minutes passed, and Jack finally lifted his head to look at my face. “I guess that answers that question.”

I let out a laugh. “Yeah, but I kind of can’t believe he showed up here,” I told him, referring to my ex-husband.

“That took some fucking balls,” Jack noted.

I huffed. “God, that man was always so delusional.”

“I noticed. Are you sure you’re alright?”

I took a moment to think about my answer to that question. Was I alright? Not surprisingly, it didn’t take me long to come up with my response. “I am. I’m horrified that he cheated on me, but it’s water under the bridge now, because thankfully, I got out when I did. And I’ve already taken the time to get over the hurt he caused. He can’t hurt me anymore, Jack, especially not when I’ve got a man like you standing beside me and having my back.”

Something moved through his expression, and his fingers pressed in deeper. “I’m proud of you,” he whispered, with his lips pressed into my hair.

My arms squeezed him tightly around his neck. “Thank you.”

Jack kissed my forehead in response.

Eventually, we separated, and Jack set me down on my feet. “Sucks about the baby,” he declared.

I nodded. “Yeah. For a brief moment, I thought I felt bad for Aurora when Tom walked away, but I realize now that wasn’t it. She did what she did with a married man, and she knew what she was doing. But now there’s an innocent baby that’s going to be caught up in this mess. That’s who I feel bad for. I really hope Tom steps up to the plate and does the right thing for his kid.”

Jack jerked his chin down in agreement. “Yeah. Lucky for you, you don’t have to worry about that.”

Something that felt a lot like relief moved through me. “Yeah.”

“Hungry?” he asked.

I dipped my chin.

Jack wrapped his arm around my shoulders, curled me into his body, and gave me one more kiss on my head. After, he lifted a hand to the side of my face and touched my cheek gently. His eyes watched his finger’s movements, and the soft touch had me needing to make sure he knew how I felt.

“Jack?”

“What, sweetheart?”

I reached my hand up, ran my thumb along his bottom lip, and said, “Thank you.”

His brows knit together. “For what?”

I pressed a chaste kiss to the corner of his mouth. “For standing up to Tom for me. He never had my back like that in any situation, and it feels really good to know that you will,” I told him.

His arm dropped down and slid around my waist. Holding me close, his voice dipped low. “It’s my honor and privilege to be that man for you, Dakota.”

“I love you, Jack.”

“I love you, too.”

Jack and I took a few more seconds to stare into one another’s eyes. It was him who finally urged, “Come on. Let’s go get cleaned up, so I can feed you.”

With that, the two of us moved away from the door to go get ourselves cleaned up.
