“I love you,” Hunt said, his words firm and sure.

“I love you too,” Emma replied. She leaned in and kissed him, before pulling away as she heard footsteps in the distance. “Sly is almost back.”

Hunt nodded, and as she tried to sit up, he stopped her, holding her face close. He kissed her tenderly before helping her to her feet. They quickly got dressed and turned to wait for Sly. As Hunt pulled his jacket on, Emma shook her head, trying to clear it, ready herself for the fight ahead.

“Wait, Hunt,” Emma began, “I can’t let you do this. I can’t let you kill yourself for this. No way.”

“Emma, I’m not…” He paused, thinking about it. Emma smiled as she realized he had the same thought. He wanted a life with her, and dying in the sewer wasn’t really going to help that.“I want a life with you, so we’re going to do what we can. But if it comes to it—”

“It won’t,” Emma cut in.

“But if it does,” Hunt reaffirmed, “we can’t afford to be selfish. We need to do what’s right. Garret has to be stopped, one way or another. We can’t let…this…get in the way of that. We have to do what’s right. So promise me you’ll try to stay objective.”

Emma looked away. He was asking her to promise that she would leave him to die. “I can’t promise that. I can’t. I’ve tried doing it already, and I couldn’t let it happen. So I can’t do that now.”

Hunt walked up to her, kissing her lips. Emma felt her knees go weak at his touch. Her body wanted more of the wily Hunter. He looked into her eyes. “Then I won’t make you have to make that decision.”

Sly arrived a few minutes later, looking at them with a knowing smile. “Well, what happened here?”

“Get to it Sly,” Hunt replied.

She chuckled, looking at Emma. “Conan’s men. They’re not relaxed though. He put them on high alert, so if they see us we are going to get into a fight. They’ll most likely hear us coming too.”

“So we’ll need a distraction,” Emma said. “You’re fast. You’ll head out first, draw their attention toward you. We’ll head out once they’re no longer focused on the exit, and attack them from behind.”

Sly raised an eyebrow at Emma. Hunt turned to look at her too. They were both surprised that she had come up with a plan of attack. Sly shook her head, not agreeing. “Uh, no we can’tdo that. See I already risked my life checking out the exit. You can’t use me like that again. I mean, how can I trust you?”

“How can I trust you?” Emma shot back. “I mean, how do I know you’ve not made a plan with them, just leading us to the slaughter?”

“I’m not!” Sly yelled. “You could just slip out the back and leave me to face them on my own!”

Emma smiled. She had considered it. There was no reason to fight if they could avoid it. But they had to do something either way. She shook her head. “You’re going first. If you want to prove that you trust us and want us to trust you, then you’ll head out first, and we’ll save your ass if you do need saving.”

Sly grunted but turned and led the way. Hunt walked up to Emma as they made their way toward the hatch. He smiled at her, with a bit of pride on his face. She raised an eyebrow at him. “What’s that look on your face? You look constipated or something.”

“Crazy to see you coming up with a plan that puts someone else’s life in danger,” Hunt said, not minding that Sly could hear them.

“Well she needs to prove herself,” Emma replied. “Also, I need a way to make sure that we can get away from here.”

“Of course,” Hunt replied.

They walked in silence for a few minutes, with Emma thinking about what she could possibly do when they got there. She had to save Hunt somehow.

“Hey,” Emma began.

“Yeah?”

“Why do you do it?” Emma asked. “Hunt.”

“What?”

“Like, why do you hunt?”

He raised an eyebrow. “Why do I do what?”

Emma chuckled. “You’re a Hunter, why do you hunt paranormals?”

“Oh,” Hunt replied, shaking his head.
