“Good.” Nate hands me a business card. “I sent a referral to Dr. Herra for your prenatal care. You’re first appointment is in two weeks.”

“I appreciate it.”

“Don’t mention it.”

The door to the clubhouse flies open, drawing our attention. Nico strides in, his expression furious, and Story is right behind him.

“I thought I was meeting you at home?” I call out to him.

Nico closes the distance between us and wraps me up in a hug. When he finally lets go, he turns to Nate.

“What’s the word, Doc?”

“Congrats, Dad,” Nate replies with a grin.

Nico lifts me off my feet and spins me around. As much as I love being in his arms, little nugget isn’t a fan of spinning. And Nico still hasn’t answered my question.

“Put me down,” I complain.

“Sorry,” Nico says when he sets me on my feet. “I couldn’t help it. I’m so fucking happy.”

“Great, me too. But a minute ago you looked like you wanted to kill someone with your bare hands.”

“That’s because he does,” Story comments, almost as if she’s annoyed by it. “I’m gonna go get some sleep. Once Harlow and Malachi are back in the morning, there won’t be much time for that.”

Story walks away, toward the stairs to go up to her room. I stare at Nico, silently commanding him to tell me what the fuck is going on.

“Why are Harlow and Malachi coming home in the morning? They’re on their honeymoon!”

Nico suddenly looks uncomfortable. He darts his gaze everywhere but at me.

“Nico,” I grind out.

“Nate, thanks for doing the blood test,” Nico says and shakes the doctor’s hand. “But you can head on home.”

“Sure thing,” Nate says.

“Nico, what is going on?” I ask as I drag him to the table at the back of the main room.

“Story did it,” he says flatly. “She connected the dots between the Bend family and Nicholi.”

“That’s great.”

“It is.”

“Why do I get the feeling that it’s not great?” I narrow my eyes. “What’s the connection?”

“Marsha Bend’s boss.”

“I don’t understand.”

Nico takes his cell phone out of his jacket pocket and taps the screen a few times before turning it around so I can see.

“Recognize him?”

“Of course I do,” I snap. “But Yanni’s dead. He was taken out last year when Malachi and Gill wiped the town clean of any connection to the Family.”

Nico reaches for my hand, but when I pull away, he leans back and sighs. “That’s what we thought.”
