Page 63 of Peppermint's Twist

“Vinnie?”

“His eyes are darker; they don’t have the tiny gold flecks like yours.”

“Vinnie?”

“I think Nicholi came out of hiding.”

“Nicholi’s here?”

“Uh, no. He left about twenty minutes ago. Peppermint was with him.”

I stomp on the gas and send the car crashing through the gate. Metal screeches against metal. I call Peppermint’s phone, but it goes straight to voicemail. Either it’s dead, or Nicholi turned it off and ditched it.

I yank the steering wheel to the left to slide the car into a stop next to the clubhouse. Without bothering to cut the engine, I jump out and race inside.

“Story!”

I run upstairs and check Peppermint’s room, hoping like hell that Vinnie was just messing with me. The room is empty.

“Story!” I shout again.

“What?” she barks when we almost collide on the staircase. “What’s wrong?”

“Nicholi has Peppermint.”

“What?”

We both go back downstairs. I follow her to the meeting room. There are two laptops open and running, along with scattered files and papers, on the table.

“Nico, he can’t have her. There’s been nothing to indicate that he’s out of hiding.”

“He has her, trust me.”

“Where would he take her?” she asks as she sits and starts tapping the keyboard. “Any ideas?”

“I don’t know.”

“Think, Nico. There has to be a place that would mean something to him.”

Nothing is coming to me. I hit the speed dial for Malachi and set my cell on the table.

“Nico, I have a meeti—”

“Nicholi has Peppermint,” I bark.

“What?”

“He has her, Mal.”

“How?”

“Harlow will have to ask Vinnie about that,” I snap. “Get to the clubhouse and bring your wife. We need to find Peppermint.”

“Yeah, okay. We’ll be there.”

“Wait,” I shout before he can disconnect the call. “Any idea where he’d take her? Anything that jumps out at you?”

“No.”
