Taylor set her drinks down and blew out a breath. “What did you do? How did it feel to have him here?”

“It felt weird.” I picked up my fork and twirled it around the pasta. “I don’t know how else to explain it. It was like two worlds colliding.”

Taylor pulled her own plate towards her. “So, are you going to tell me what happened, or are you just going to keep dragging this on?”

“I’m not trying to drag this on. I’m just processing,” I replied, with a shake of my head. With a sigh, I took a bite out of my pasta, the rich flavorful tomato sauce exploding on the tip of my tongue. “He asked me out to lunch, and I said yes. We went to that café you and I like.”

“Is he firing you?”

“No, he’s not firing me. He told me the job is still mine if I want it, and I told him that I did recognize him.”

“Why would you tell him that?”

“Because I didn’t want to lie? I don’t know. I just didn’t feel like there was a point in keeping it from him.”

Taylor reached for her drink and took a few sips in between mouthfuls of food. “Okay, and what did he have to say for himself?”

“He left me a note the night he left,” I told her with a frown. “I don’t know how I didn’t see it, but he told me he had to leave because there was an emergency at work.”

Taylor eyed me from across the table. “Do you believe him?”

“I do.”

Taylor cleared her throat. “So, what are you going to do now? Are you still going to go and work for him?”

“I have a bigger problem to worry about.” I set my fork down and inhaled sharply. “He knows about Ron.”

Taylor’s eyes widened into saucers. “You told him? I thought you weren’t sure you wanted him to be in Ron’s life.”

“I’m not, but he told me he did his research, and he knows.”

Taylor took a long sip of her drink before setting it down. “Okay, maybe this isn’t a bad thing. He had to know sooner or later, right?”

“Not like this though. What if he tries to take him away, Tay?”

“Why would he try and take him away? You’re still Ron’s mother.”

“Yeah, but I don’t have the same kind of resources he has. Bernard is rich, Tay. He could give Ron everything I can’t. He can give him a much better life.”

And I was getting in the way of that because I was insecure and paranoid.

How could I even hesitate at a time like this?

Considering Bernard held my professional fate in his hands, with my shifts at the restaurant dwindling to almost nothing, I knew it wasn’t a smart decision to make an enemy of him. Granted, Bernard had been both gracious and generous so far, but it was because he didn’t know the truth.

The minute he learned Ron was his, everything was going to change.

And I didn’t want it to.

I wanted us to keep living in our bubble where we were safe and sound and cared for.

Where Bernard could never break our hearts.

“Having money doesn’t mean he can give Ron everything he needs,” Taylor argued, her eyes flashing with emotion. “Money isn’t everything, Rach. Nothing can take the place of love and affection, and no amount of money can buy that.”

“He can try.”

“Are you saying this because you honestly believe he’ll take Ron away or because you’re afraid he will?”
