And I hadn’t been able to sleep properly in weeks.

After a few short months together, it was hard to believe this was how it was going to end between us. Even though time and space had softened my resolve, Bernard’s had only grown stronger, making it impossible for me to know what he was thinking.

Or if he even wanted me back at all.

Grant cleared his throat and draped an arm over the back of the booth. “I’m glad he’s a part of Ron’s life. Ron deserves to know his father.”

A lump rose in the back of my throat. “He does.”

“I’m sorry he hurt you, Rach. You don’t deserve that.”

I shrugged and stared at a spot on the table. “I’ll be okay.”

The waitress materialized carrying a tray with nachos, salsa, and wings. She set them down with a smile, along with our drinks, before disappearing. I looked over at Ron, happily spinning in circles with the other kids and some of the knots in my stomach unfurled.

He was all that mattered.

And all I needed to be focused on.

Everything else was going to fall into place.

It had to.

Grant got up and sat across from me. He took a few sips of his soda before setting it down again. His dark eyes scanned the restaurant before settling on me. Then he sat up straighter and linked his fingers together.

“I’ve really loved getting to spend the last few weeks with you.”

I reached for a chip and chewed on it. “I’m glad we ran into each other again, Grant.”

“Me too. I didn’t think I was going to see you, much less get to be a part of your life again. And Ron’s. He’s such a great kid, Rach.”

I gave him a small smile. “He is.”

“And I’m glad I got to be there for you,” Grant continued, his dark eyes growing intent.

“I’m glad too.”

I never imagined that Grant and I would be able to talk to each other again, much less be such an important part of each other’s lives. Over the past few weeks, he and I had gotten much closer, and I’d come to rely on him more than I cared to admit.

He was exactly the kind of friend I needed.

Especially while I struggled to forget Bernard.

Why was it so hard to get over him?

Grant cleared his throat. “Rachel, I know you’ve been through a lot the past few months, and I know that Bernard is Ron’s father…I’m not looking to replace him.”

My brows furrowed together. “I didn’t think you were.”

Grant unlinked his fingers together and his hands underneath the table. “I want to be a part of your life, Rachel.”

“You are.”

“As more than a friend.”

I reeled back, and my breath hitched in my throat. “Oh.”

Grant patted his pockets and pulled out a box. He set it down on the table between us, a smile hovering on the edge of my lips. “I wanted something a lot more romantic than this, but this feels like the right time to ask.”
