“I don't care. She’s no longer your concern.” Jamieson applies more pressure, making Parker wheeze and groan out in pain. “I’ll be in touch, Judd, and I shouldn't have to tell you twice,” he hisses and stands, using all his weight against Parker. A nauseating crack has me jumping, and Jeff’s killer shouts abruptly, his eyes going wide in pain. Parker’s face twists as he struggles to his feet, his arm hanging unnaturally.
Jamieson broke his arm!
“Clock’s ticking, bitch.” With a menacing scowl towards me, Parker leaves and I let out a loud sigh, sagging against the counter. The past couple of weeks catch up with me and silent tears slip down my cheeks. Having managed to escape the fury of Parker for a second time, you’d think I’d be ecstatic, but instead I weep at the predicament I’m in. I want to go home and no longer fear for my life. I drop my head, breathing heavily as I look around the spacious apartment and find myself overwhelmed by confusion. Jamieson is surrounded by wealth and not the usual kind I’d expect from a typically successful businessman. There is so much more to him, to them. And the obvious stain of criminal activity he and hisbrothersare caught up in, not to mention his involvement with a killer, sends a ripple of dread through me.
I’m not getting out of this situation any time soon.
Or even at all.
I turn my head to find Ryan gripping Jamieson’s head and talking quietly to him, calming him.
“My boyfriend will wonder where I am,” I say. My parents too. Not to mention my boss. Jamieson’s jaw flexes at the mention of Simon.
“Fuck him, he’s the reason you’re in this mess,” Seth sneers, giving me a slow, disbelieving shake of his head.
“I ...What do you mean?” I look at Jamieson when Seth refuses to respond. What the hell is going on?
“Simon borrowed money and couldn't repay it. Jeff died as a result,” Jamieson delivers coldly.
Parker. I tilt my head as something he said before Jeff was murdered comes back to me.Payment is late and we’re going to teach him a lesson.
I stare at the floor, my mind racing over the past few weeks.
“No... he wouldn't,” I say more to myself.
“Why were you there that night?” Ryan asks.
Simon was the man they were teaching a lesson to, they just used Jeff to send a message. How much money does Simon owe?
“Simon asked me to get a file,” I whisper.
“He sent you there knowing he was on borrowed time.” Ryan bares his teeth and the three men share a terrifying look.
“No.” I shake my head, not willing to admit my boyfriend’s deceit. I’m not ready to comprehend what is staring me in the face.
“Avery, you’re not that stupid. He’s a piece of shit who sacrificed you for his own measly life,” Jamieson growls.
I blanch. Simon knew it wasn’t safe, and he sent me to get that file, knowing I would be in danger.
That fucker!
My stomach plummets, but it’s quickly replaced by anger.
“I want to call him,” I demand.
“That's no—”
“An option?” I finish for him. Jamieson raises a brow at me, but I don't care for his demands right now. “Give me my phone. I can hardly run off with it.” I wiggle my fingers still cuffed to the breakfast bar, the metal rattling as my hands shake with rage. “And let’s face it, Simon isn’t going to come running to my rescue, is he?” I snap, my lip wobbling.
The men converse silently with serious looks on their faces. Seth shrugs, Ryan nods, and Jamieson disappears for a few seconds before bringing me my phone. I didn’t actually expect them to allow me to call. It has several missed calls and voice messages. With a bit of help, I unlock it and dial Simon.
“Avery, thank g—”
“You piece of shit, coward!” I snap. “I can’t believe you sent me for that file when it was you they were after. I nearly died!” I slap my hands against the island, the cuffs clinking loudly.
“I can explain. I needed the money, and I got mixed u—”
“You better hope Parker fucking Judd gets to you before I do. That's me breaking up with you, by the way.” My anger begins to turn to thick emotion and my eyes fill with tears. “I’ve lost everything,” I choke.
