“What?” I squeak. “You do not.”

“Birdie, it’s planned.” He chuckles, leaning to nip at the tender flesh of my wrist.

“Well, why sa—”

“You can plan the date.” His grin is wolfish.

“It’s unhealthy to be so in control.”

Leaning across the table, he stares me dead in the eye.

“I dare you to repeat that when we’re in bed later.” My stomach swoops, my thighs clenching under his hungry stare.

“I thought you wanted public sex?” I whisper, and his brows shoot up.

“You’re playing with fire.”

“I don’t like it when you’re away on business.” I pout.

“I know, baby, New York was boring without you. Come with me next time?”

I nod, smiling at him before I reach to look over the menu.

“Avery?” The sound of my name has me twisting to my right. Simon stares dumbfounded at me. He’s wearing a server’s uniform, his hands filled with dirty tableware.

My gaze snaps in terror to Jamieson, who is slowly rising out of his chair, a violent glint in his eye. As much as I wanted to make Simon suffer, I begged The Panelto let him live. Seeing that he works here tells me that they stripped everything from him, the house, business, his dignity. He looks drawn, he’s lost weight, and his hair has thinned excessively. If I didn't recognise his voice, I would have never known it was him.

“Simon, please leave,” I whisper as Jay walks the short space to tower over my ex. I frown at Jay, my mind slowly catching up with what is staring me in the face. He knew Simon worked here. Why is he doing this? I frown at him, but his attention is on Simon. He grips the back of his neck and forces my ex to look down at me.

“Doesn’t my wife look sensational?” Jamieson’s cultured voice is silky smooth compared to Simon’s shaky one.

“Wife?”

“Tell my wife how good she looks,” Jamieson growls, shifting to place himself in front of Simon, blocking the view of those seated in the restaurant.

“You look sen—”

“Who said you could look at my wife, you fucking piece of scum.” Simon’s eyes are wild with confused terror. He looks everywhere but at me. “Fuck me, you’re pathetic.” Simon’s head drops at my husband’s scathing tone. “I know all about your little mess with Parker Judd.”

“Jamieson, stop,” I whisper, seeing someone official heading our way, a manager perhaps.

“I own you now,” Jamieson sneers in Simon’s ear, making him whimper.

“Jamieson, please.” I stand, my eyes pleading. People are gathering to watch.

“Mr Thayer, is there a problem?” I see the badge of the man who approaches us. He’s the manager.

“Yes. This fucking vermin hit on my wife.” He just outed us. Now everyone will know we’re a couple.

“You’re fired!” the manager snaps, and Simon looks shocked, his mouth flaying like a fish. “Get out.”

Simon’s head lifts to look at me.

“Don’t you dare,” Jamieson growls, his voice low, halting Simon in his tracks. With limp shoulders and a defeated sigh, he walks quickly across the restaurant floor, depositing the dirty dishes as he hurries out the main door.

“Ready to order?” Jay asks, a dark glint in his eyes. I shake my head, completely thrown by his actions just now. “Give us a minute,” he instructs the manager.

I want to leave, but seeing the commotion he has caused, I decide it’s best to stay. I take my seat quickly and he stays standing over me, blocking me from view. He takes my hand and withdraws my engagement ring out his pocket, sliding it on as he watches me through heavy lids. Leaning down, he slants a possessive kiss over my mouth and smirks at me.
