I turn, narrowing my eyes. “I don’t have time for this.”

“For me?”

“For you.” I run a hand over my face and sigh. “Willa put on a show, and unfortunately, I think Sarah saw.”

“That woman’s a menace to this town. Christ, she’s burned through most of the guys already, she should pack up and get out of dodge, or learn some life lessons and better herself.” He shakes his head and leans against my truck.

I raise a brow, finding a small nugget of amusement in all this. A very small one. “Daddy’s cut her off.”

I’m not that much of an asshole I get off on other’s misery, but Willa’s going to be fine. Her father won’t let her starve and maybe this is what she needs.

“He did what?”

“Cut her off.”

Lawson lets out a howl of laughter. “The old codger should have done that years ago.” He shakes his head and raises his hat to Willa’s father. “Give Sarah a few, and we can head up to the lodge for lunch. I’m gonna see my woman.”

“Wedding stuff?” I perk up, but not over the wedding. I know Lawson. He moves fast when he’s settled on something.

And he’s focused. I’m betting he wants to start a family sooner rather than later. He’s pretty much told me he’d love her to see round with their kid. To have a little Dakota running around. And I’ve seen the change when he looks at London and the other kids. It’s like a man who can see his future and likes it.

Me? I have to pin down a woman so sweet and prickly just for a chance at seeing where things might go. And I don’t even know what I want with that except to see.

I take a breath and it feels a little shaky. The sky above is cloudy, the kind that come with storms and for me, it reflects the storm inside. Because I don’t know how I feel except I don’t want some stupid misunderstanding in the way.

Sweet Sarah has a way of letting that shit happen.

Or maybe it’s just with me.

But Lawson so happens to be heading where I need to go. And hopefully, Dakota’s talking sense into her right now. If my buddy’s heading there, then his woman’s there too.

I look at him.

“Get in, I’ll take you to the lodge. She’s already had more than a few, and I’m getting sick of her running from me.”

He laughs again as he gets into the passenger seat. “Seems like you don’t like things when they’re not easy sailing for you.”

“What are you saying?” I shoot him a dark look as I pull out into the light traffic. “That she’s rejecting me?”

He rubs a hand on his beard. “I’m just saying you’re used to women falling all over themselves to get them a little piece of the Conley goods.”

“Right, and you weren’t fucking about either with ease?”

“Hey, I’m a man with a good woman. And if you ask me, Sarah’s a good woman.”

“Too good for me?”

“If the shoe fits there, Cinderella.”

I mutter something not nice about him under my breath.

He pats my shoulder as we pull up at the lodge, grinning. “Seriously, it’s good for you to be worked up about a woman.”

“I’m not worked up. I’m pissed off. Completely different.”

And we head in together.

Dakota is every inch the wildcat Law calls her. Angry, focused on me, wildcat. She stands, anger practically rolling off her in waves, hands on hips, in her office where me and Lawson have been dragged.
