For someone who could have ended up as roadkill, I’m okay. Actually, I’m good, and as I slide a look at Leland’s strong profile, I wonder if he has anything to do with it.

He catches me looking, then his gaze returns to the road. “You okay?”

The quiet concern in his question makes my breath catch and it warms me.

“Yeah. I’m made of strong stuff.”

“I know.”

He nods. “Sarah, listen, about—”

“What do you think they’re going to do? Try and take the lodge?”

I’m dancing around whatever it is he wants to talk about.

Whatever?

I know.

Him and me.

Last night.

The night before.

What it means to me and to him and how he’s not the marrying kind and how we’re going to just see. And I don’t want to deal with any of that. Not right now. Not when I don’t know what I want.

But that’s another lie. I stare out at the rain and the wet scenery. Another lie, because there’s one thing I know I want, and that’s him. Beyond that? Beyond that is why I’m dancing past the issues, the questions, and the conversation. Because I honestly don’t know if a dead end in the future is what I want. Breathing out, I turn back to look at him.

His jaw is set, hands tight once more on the wheel. “We’re gonna make this okay. The will is airtight, and they’ll come, and eventually, they’ll run out of ways.”

“Unless they find one.”

“I doubt that.”

I half smile. “Never say never.”

For a moment, he doesn’t answer. “You’ll learn I’m the kind of guy who finds his way around that. I’m ready, for whatever battle comes.”

And I don’t think he’s just talking about the lodge. Not at all.

When we get back, Leland drops me at the lodge and helps me in with all my stuff. Dakota narrows her eyes and then smiles.

“Sorted?”

“You bet,” he says to her. Then he looks at me and the room disappears. I’m caught in his eyes, that mouth and he doesn’t even touch me.

But that look holds so much, and I shiver, waiting. He takes a step forward and picks up a lock of my rain-damp hair. “And you, sweet Sarah, are going to give me a chance.”

Leland leans in, and my eyes flutter shut.

I’m not one for public displays of affection, but right now, I’m up for it. And I can smell that honeyed spice of him, the heat of his breath on my lips.

His phone buzzes and I open my eyes. He’s stepped back, and right in that moment, I hate whoever is on the other end.

He moves off, talking in a low voice.

“Dark horse, Sarah. You had a lotta sex.
