The man chuckled. “Sorry. I’m Stone Jacobs. Hank called, and then your father called, letting us know you were on the way. We have a room ready for you if you’d like to get settled in first.”

“Yes, please.” More than anything, she wanted to change out of the skirt and into jeans and one of her own shirts. Though she liked wearing Moe’s oversized T-shirt, she felt like a little girl playing dress-up in it. She liked wearing it better when they were alone.

Stone turned to Moe. “We put Breely in the room next to yours. Since you’re taking this assignment, we figured you’d want to stay close.”

“Thanks,” Moe said. “I do.”

Stone led the way, carrying the two bags.

Moe fell in step beside Breely and reached for her hand.

She held on until they entered a hallway and stopped before a solid wooden door stained dark mahogany.

Stone used a key to unlock the door, then handed the key to Breely. He tipped his head to the door beside the open one. “Moe’s in that room. There is a connecting door. You can choose to keep it locked, but if you’re in any kind of trouble, he'll have to go around. Either way, the doors will be locked, and it will take longer for him to get in.”

Stone entered the room, deposited the bags on the bed and came back out. “Cookie serves dinner promptly at six. I don’t know what he’s making, but it smells good.”

“Cookie never disappoints.” Moe’s stomach grumbled loudly. He glanced at his watch. “We have thirty minutes until six if you’d like to shower and change.”

“I would,” Breely said. To Stone, she smiled. “Thank you for everything.”

“Our pleasure.” Stone clapped a hand on Moe’s back. “Moe will take good care of you.” He nodded to Moe. “See you at six.” He left them standing in the hallway and disappeared around a corner.

Moe glanced down at Breely. “Are you okay?”

She gave him a weak smile. “I will be.”

He cupped her face in his palm. “Yes, you will.” Then he looked up, entered her room and strode to the connecting door, twisted the lock and pushed through to the room on the other side.

“Like Stone said, it’s your choice whether you want to keep the door locked or leave it unlocked.” He came back to her and captured her face in his hands. “I’d rather you left it unlocked. It doesn’t mean I’ll consider it an open invitation to visit whenever I like. That will be your choice. I just want to be able to get to you if someone breaks into your room.”

She raised a finger to his lip. “Leave it unlocked.”

He kissed her finger. “Okay. I’m going to get a shower and shave. See you in twenty-five minutes?”

She nodded.

Moe passed through the connecting door and closed it behind him, leaving it unlocked.

The possibilities that the unlocked door represented warmed her blood and left her body in a delicious sense of anticipation.

Those possibilities would have to wait. They hadn’t had breakfast or lunch, and apparently, Cookie liked people to be prompt.

Breely had wanted to get away from the family ranch and experience life.

Well, she’d gotten what she’d wanted and more.

She’d worked as a waitress with some wonderful people, had been rescued from kidnappers by a sexy PJ, had flown in his private plane to Denver and made mad, crazy love through the night with a stranger.

So what if she didn’t know what came next? She could be resilient and open to the next great adventure.

She just hoped she’d live to enjoy it.

Chapter 10

Twenty-five minutes later, Moe knocked gently on the connecting door between his room and Breely’s.

Her soft, “Come in,” made his heart skip beats and his blood burn through his veins headed south.
