"What's going on?"

"Nothing. This target is a pain in the arse."

Lock laughed. "Oh, I know lots about pains in the arse. And I have seen this particular pain in the arse. She's fit."

"I hadn't noticed." Liar.

He just chuckled under his breath. "Sure, you haven't. You know her from before, don't you?"

I'd been honestly waiting for this question. Waiting for someone to notice. "Yeah, she hasn’t changed."

Lock whistled under his breath. "Is she a problem for you?"

I sighed. "No, I can do the assignment." Because at the end of the day, what choice did I have? Westin Rourke was someone I’d created to protect myself. And if I did this right, I could let Westin St. James out and finally put this behind me.

"It's not a problem. She is not a problem."

"I'm your handler on this case, unless you prefer Saff."

I considered Saff asking these questions, knowing full well that I might have a thing for Nissa, and heat brushed up my neck. "Nah, you're fine.”

"Okay, whatever you say, mate. Just remember, whatever it takes to get to the target, whatever you have to do."

A flare of fury worked its way up my spine. I knew he was saying I might have to use Nissa to get to Montgomery. But that wasn't me. I wasn't that person anymore. At the same time, I might need to be, and that didn't sit well. "I hear you, but that won’t be necessary. I'll do the job, gain his trust, and get in."

"You can do this."

"Oh, I know." As pep talks went, this one needed work.

"Excellent, then you don't have any problems, do you?"

"Nope. I've got this."

"So what was that thing at the bar tonight? With the beer? You have quick hands, Rook. Good for sparring. I've never seen you slip. Not once. But somehow that lager just slipped on out and poured all over her."

I swallowed hard. "Shut it." His laugh was a guffaw, ringing in my ears. "I hate you. Put Saff on."

Lock laughed. "Wait’ll I tell Saint."

"You're not fucking telling Saint anything." The two of them loved to take the piss out of me.

"Oh, he's going to love it. Should I start singing like we're back at primary? Westin and Nissa, sitting in a—"

I hung up on him. Why the hell was I so desperate to stay with a family that I wanted to shoot half the time? Lock and Saint were the big brothers I never asked for.

He has a point though. You don't slip. That was intentional.

I smirked to myself. It backfired on me though. Because now, the mental image of her tits was going to haunt me forever. On the internal scoreboard, she was winning, and she wasn't even trying.

I knew what I had to do. Stay the hell away from her, or it was going to cost me everything.

Westin

I turned on the shower. I didn't like wasting the water, but it was at least going to keep my voice muffled. I actually even planned on taking a shower afterward. I had the towel slung around my waist and everything. I just needed to do a quick check-in for the briefing meeting.

I typed in my code and called in. "Rook here."

I kept an ear out just in case Nissa was up and moving about.
