Everything was fine until they rounded the lane that would lead to the house. There was an outcropping where you could park and watch the stars, and he pulled in. I gave him some space, staying about a hundred meters or so back as the rain pelted my windows.

This is too much space. Go and get her.

I shoved down that thought. That was irrational. Nissa was like my sister. This was her first date. I knew how important she thought it was, and I had to just sit back and let it happen.

Good job of that. Is that why your hands are gripping the steering wheel so hard?

My breathing was harsh, and all I wanted to do was go and rip that guy's lips off before they could get anywhere near her.

But I had to follow orders.

Frank said, “This is a great place. Do you come here often?"

If those were his pickup lines, I probably had nothing to worry about. But then I wasn't a sixteen-year-old girl out on her first date, looking to impress her mates.

"Oh, I live here, remember? That's my house up there. I've walked all of these grounds."

I couldn't help but smile at her obliviousness.

Good old Frank tried another tactic. "So, when am I going to see you again?"

I found myself holding my breath. What the hell was she going to tell him? There was no way she liked him and wanted to go out again. None. I could read body language. Besides, she was too young for any of that. She could get up to all of that shit at uni.

"Oh, Frank, you're sweet. Honestly, you are, and I like you. I just… I'm not really feeling any chemistry, you know?"

His voice went lower. "I've been nice to you all night. You acted like you liked me."

Bloody hell, he was one of those.

Nissa’s sigh was heavy. "Please, don't be that bloke."

"What bloke?” he said, his voice getting much louder. “The kind who hates feeling led on?"

"Jesus Christ, you are that guy,” Nissa said.

“You know what?” he said angrily. “You can just get out here."

What the hell? There was no way he was going to kick her out of the car and not take her all the way home. Julian might be a prick, but he had rules. And the appearance of geniality was one of them. That kid was going to earn himself an enemy tonight.

Just the one?

Well, I hated him on sight, but I had different reasons.

Nissa squinted up at the rain as she shoved the door open and climbed out of his car. "Thanks for nothing."

"Next time don't be such a cock tease."

She rounded on him. "Are you out of your mind? Just because we hung out and I let you win at darts—because honestly, no one is comically that bad—I mean, couldn't you even tell I was faking it? That doesn't mean in any way that I owe you anything, just for the record."

"Jesus, do you have to be such a—"

Before he could finish, I pulled the car up directly behind his, making sure my brights were on and my tires screeched as I threw the car into park.

Nissa’s eyes went wide with panic as I climbed out of the car. "What are you doing Westin?"

I barely heard her though. I just jerked open the driver's side door, pulling Frank out of his car. "Mate, I'm going to say this once. If I ever see you near her again, you're not walking away unscathed. Do you understand me?"

Frank tried to look hard, popping his chest out a little and squaring his shoulders. "Just who the fuck are you?"
