The man I had just put on his knees reached for her, and the woman shook her head. Saff was calm, deadly. She didn't let go of the chokehold and just pulled the woman into the dark. A part of me almost felt sorry for her, but she had tried to Tase me, so there was that.

The man reached out and tried to grab me around the waist, and I got him with an elbow to the back of the neck, which dropped him on the ground. I wasted no time after that, grabbing Nissa and tossing her on my shoulder and prowling through the crowd.

This time she didn't fight me at all. Her hold on me was loose, but I could feel her shaking. "Are you okay?" I shouted over the din of the crowd. All she did was hold on to me tighter as if to signal that she was fine. In my comm, I heard Saff's voice. "She's down."

"Copy. Alive?"

"I make it a point not to kill Interpol agents."

"She's Interpol?"

"Affirmative. I got a list of Interpol agents that might make a play for Nissa. She's one of them. Agent Nyla Kincade. Do you have it from here?"

"Yeah. I’ve just got to make it to the cars."

"Roger. I'll have the follow detail ready to go."

Why had this turned into such a bloody mess? This was supposed to be easy. She wanted to go to a concert. She wanted to be free for one fucking night, and it had all blown up in my face.

I reached Section N, and finally the crowd had dissipated enough to put Nissa down. She was right there with me. Walking alongside, not saying a word, not fighting, not arguing, not going hysterical. She was deadly calm. And for some reason, that worried me even more. It would be easier if she was asking a lot of questions if she was crying, but no, none of that.

At Section N, we took a hard left and followed the emergency exit signs to the private garage where we’d parked. Julian's men were waiting, as were Adam and Jamila. Nissa ran to her mate. "Oh my God, are you guys okay?"

Adam nodded. "Yeah. What took you guys so long?"

Nissa slid her gaze to me but answered him quietly. "The crowd, that's all."

And once we had everyone tucked in, she looked at me. "You were right."

"I didn't want to be."

"I'm never going to be free from this, am I?"

Nissa

Four years ago…

Back at Mrs. Pembry’s cottage I followed him, taking note of the tension in his shoulders. "Why are you so mad?"

"Are you seriously asking that? That was careless, Nissa."

"You do recognize you're mad at me and I didn't do anything wrong? He's the arsehole here."

Westin leaned close and growled, the sound sending a shiver over my skin. "Yes, he is the one who is wrong. But he could have hurt you, Nissa. You need to be more careful. Not everyone is good or kindhearted. Especially blokes. You need to be really fucking careful about the kind of guys you choose."

I whirled around on him. "There you go, saying it's my fault again."

He ran his hands through his hair. "Fuck, that's not what I'm saying, Nissa. I'm saying I didn't like seeing him paw at you. I'm saying I fucking hated it. I'm saying I never wanted you to go out with him. I'm saying I never want to see you go out with anyone like that again."

I squared my shoulders and leveled a narrow glare at him. "Well, if you have so much to say about who I go out with and what I do, maybe you should pluck up the card and ask me out yourself."

His brows furrowed for a moment even as his lips parted. "Nissa, we can't have that conversation."

"Why not? Why can't we have that conversation? It seems like maybe it's an important conversation for us to have."

He was so close now. I could feel his breath on my skin, but he still felt so far away. This was Westin. My best mate. The only person I could talk to about anything. And for the last several months it just felt like we were miles apart on everything. I had no idea what I'd done wrong. No idea why it was like this now.
