“Trust me. There’s nothing to criticize.”

“Anyway,” Harriet draws out with another roll of her eyes, this one even more dramatic. “We’re not here to talk about your sex life.” She brings her attention back to me. “We’re here to talk about Esme’s.” She drops her voice to barely louder than a whisper. “I’m right. You had sex last night, didn’t you?”

I fight to reel in the grin that begs to be set free, but it’s impossible. So instead of keeping this from my friends, I nod.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve smiled like this.

I don’t think I’ve ever smiled like this.

Don’t think I’ve ever been so…happy. Then again, I’m not sure happy is an adequate word to describe the way Creed makes me feel.

I don’t think there’s a word in any language to describe the way Creed makes me feel.

“Based on that smile, I can only assume Lieutenant Lawson gave you another slip of the little general. Not a certain billionaire the royal household chose for you.”

“Again, it’s not that little, but yes. I slept with Creed.” My cheeks warm as I take a sip of my coffee. “And it was even more incredible than the last time.”

“Because that was your first time,” Harriet states. “Everyone’s first time sucks.”

I straighten. “My first time didn’t suck. Did it hurt? Initially, yes. But Creed was amazing through it all. Took things somewhat slow at the beginning. But last night…” I fan myself. “It was unreal.”

“Well, I’m glad you’re finally making your own choices.” Marius covers my hand and squeezes, reminding me of my reason for going down this path. “Doing something for yourself.”

“Thanks, Marius.” I hold his gaze for a beat before he pulls back.

“Now tell us about last night.”

“Yeah.” Harriet’s eyes light up with excitement. “Tell us everything.”

“Maybe not everything everything,” Marius adds. “I’d rather you not go into detail about size or girth. Broad stroke it for us.”

“Pretty sure Creed broad stroked it for Esme last night. Or maybe she broad stroked it for him.”

“There’s not much to tell,” I say, ignoring Harriet’s remark. “We decided to stop torturing ourselves in the present for what awaits us in the future. We enjoy being with each other. So we’re going to keep enjoying each other.”

“And Jameson?”

“What about Jameson?” I ask her.

“What are you going to do about your eventual marriage to him? And Creed’s impending induction into the royal guard?”

“We’ve discussed boundaries,” I answer.

“Boundaries?” Marius asks. “Like what?”

“We’ve agreed this won’t continue once he’s sworn in.”

“But what if one or both of you want it to?” he presses.

“We won’t. I made him promise not to fall in love with me. And I promised not to fall in love with him. No feelings. Just sex.”

The second I utter those words, my stomach sours, as if even my own body knows I’m full of shit.

“That sounds like a foolproof plan,” Harriet shoots back sarcastically. “Agree not to involve feelings so neither of you end up broken hearted. That’s a great idea, Ezzy. Truly. And not at all absurd.”

“It’s the only way,” I sigh, shoulders dropping.

“I understand that. And I’m happy you decided to take this leap.” She gives me a sincere smile and straightens, bringing her mug to her lips. “Just be careful.”
