Lisa, my level one Agent, goes first and shares a few books she plans on sending me. I smile at her, encouraging a job well done, and am equally pleased to hear she has a couple romantic suspense novels and a romcom she wants to send. I’m in the mood for something less sappy. Too bad we don’t accept thrillers because I’m not in the mood for reading romance.

Grayson dismisses everyone and Rachel lingers, using this as an opportunity to flirt. She says something funny and Grayson genuinely laughs. The way his eyes crinkle and his smile lights up his face sends warmth spreading through me and confuses me further. I rush to leave and I see in my peripheral he’s watching me go.

Back in my office, I send several emails to authors and update my spreadsheets. A tap of knuckles on my door precedes Grayson as he comes in and closes the door. He takes a moment to look around my office and even glances at the photo of me and Megan on my desk.

“What’s wrong?”

My gaze moves to the window. I look out at the nearby skyscrapers and the blazing sun casting a shadow from the building, while I regain control of my swirling emotions. “I’m fine,” I reply, returning my attention to him.

His tone is disapproving. “You’re not fine. Don’t lie to me, Emma. I don’t like to be lied to.”

I chuckle at his demanding tone. “Well, if you must know. My ex of two years recently ended our relationship, moved out while I was at work, and then told me he was seeing someone else via text. Rachel did a great job reminding me of that today.”

Grayson pauses in thought. His handsome face is expressionless, but I can tell the wheels are turning in that intelligent mind of his.

“How long ago?” he finally asks.

I lean back in my chair and cross my legs. Grayson’s eyes follow the length of them, linger on my stiletto’s, then return to my face.

“Two months ago,” I reply.

“Huh, that’s still fresh.”

“That it is.”

“What did Rachel say to you?”

Looking back at the computer, I refuse to reveal how much her comment affected me. “Doesn’t matter.”

The sound of Grayson’s feet moving across the floor brings my attention back to him. He’s standing close to my legs and even at that distance my heart rate increases.

“It matters to me. Tell me what she said.” His jaw is set in determination. I’m not getting out of this.

My gut tightens, remembering the words. It’s truly embarrassing. “She said maybe if I spent less time reading about sex and more time doing it, Derrick would’ve stuck around. Maybe she’s right.”

Grayson’s expression remains emotionless, but his eyes are intense as they stare into mine.

“She doesn’t know what the hell she’s talking about. A man can have a stunning woman at home and still want what he can’t have. Simply put, your ex is a dumbass for not realizing what an incredible woman you are.”

A smile parts my lips. “That’s nice. Thank you. Even though you’re trying to make me feel better, it’s still nice to hear it.”

Grayson shakes his head. “That wasn’t just to make you feel better. You know I’m attracted to you. I was from the first moment you fell into my arms.”

My cheeks flush. “I should get back to work. Thanks for checking on me.”

Grayson’s jaw tenses, like it does every time he’s irritated or has a change of emotion, then, without saying a word, he walks out of my office. Instead of reading, I stare out the window and daydream about how incredible it felt to be kissed and touched by Grayson Cole.

Chapter Four

Emma

It’s the afternoon and I’m nearly finished with the second book I’ve read today. It’s a sprint to the end now. Can’t quit when I’m this close. I can’t gobble the words fast enough. I’m on the edge of my seat and probably have red ink all over my lips from biting into my pen. A familiar tap raps on my door and I jump in my seat. Damn it! Five more minutes. That’s all I needed! Glancing at the computer clock reveals I’m almost an hour past my time to be off.

Grayson peeks in and I notice he looks tired. “You’re truly dedicated, Princess.”

I chuckle and his tired expression lightens.

“Hard day?” I ask.
