I’m sorry for what happened tonight. Please call me.

As I read his texts messages more tears sting my eyes. I don’t want to see him. I don’t want him to admit that his father is right and that all I am is a plaything. I set the phone down and fiddle with the broken bracelet in my hand. I can’t believe it. I don’t want to believe it. I know I mean something to him.

I motion to the bartender for another shot. Bringing my hand back to my side I notice a woman enter the bar who looks familiar. I wipe away a stray tear and narrow my focus. It’s Olivia. Fuck me, why now?

She blinks a couple times as she stares at me, then with one perfect, high-heeled, foot after the other, she approaches.

“Emma, right?”

She sits on the stool next to me as I sniffle and nod. “Yeah.”

“You look awful. Did Grayson end things? I remember when he ended it with me. That was a rough night for me, too.”

“No, he didn’t end things.”

“Oh, I apologize. That was presumptuous. Is it anything you’d like to talk about?”

I shake my head. Why is she being so nice to me?

“Those tears are for Grayson, though, aren’t they?”

I blink back more tears.

“I think there’s something you need to know about Grayson.”

With her pretty, pink nail-polished hand, she motions for the bartender and I look at her expectantly. “What do I need to know?”

Meeting my gaze, I can see empathy in her eyes. “Grayson is the kind of man who wants to own you; heart, body and soul and once you’ve given him everything, once you’re conquered, he’ll lose interest. It’s best you get out now.”

“And you’re not just trying to scare me off? I saw the way you were chumming it up with him the last time we were here. You seemed very interested in rekindling things.”

“What can I get you, darling?” the bartender asks, interrupting.

“A chocolate Margarita.” Her attention returns to me. “I know better than to have any feelings for Grayson. I learned my lesson. I was simply looking for sex. He is especially good at it, as I’m sure you know.”

I fight back the vomit burning my throat.

Flicking her raven hair over her shoulder, she tilts her head as she looks at me. “As a woman who’s been where you are, I’m trying to do the decent thing and warn you before your heart gets broken. Grayson isn’t capable of loving you or any woman. He knows how to make a woman feel amazing, but will never be able to give you everything you need emotionally.”

Grabbing my shot glass, I raise it, downing it in one gulp. “People change,” I respond, setting the empty glass down.

“Men like Grayson don’t change. He’s a creature of habit. You’ll see. The moment he realizes you love him, he’ll end it.”

The bartender brings her Margarita and I ask for another shot.

“How many is that?” Olivia asks.

I shrug. “Fifth or Sixth?”

She takes out her cell phone and busies herself while happily sipping from her straw. I’ve never wanted to punch a woman so much in my life and yet, part of me respects her for giving me the fair warning. She has a past with Grayson and as gut-wrenching as it is, she seems to know him better than I do.

Grayson

Pacing across my floor, running my hand over my neck, the tension builds. I don’t know Megan’s number or where she lives. Emma hasn’t returned to her apartment. She could be anywhere with anyone. I knew I never should’ve let the dinner happen.

My phone buzzes in my hand and I immediately slide the screen to read the text.

Grayson, it’s Olivia. Emma is at Masco’s. If you care about this woman, you should come get her. She’s several shots in and not looking good.
