Kenna put her hand on her stomach. “I don’t know why, but I’ve got butterflies.”

“You’re just excited,” his dad guessed.

Kenna grabbed her bag and purse and held her mug out to the side while she kissed him. “I’m off to school.” She said it with such a sweet and enthusiasticsmile he couldn’t help smiling back at her. “Thank you for waking me up this morning.” Since his dad was behind her, he didn’t see the sexy smile and sultry look in her eyes, because that thank-you was forhowhe’d woken her up this morning.

“Happy to do it every morning, sweetheart.”

“Who needs an alarm, when I have you?”

“You claimed that one’s heart a long time ago,” his dad chimed in.

She looked over her shoulder. “And I’m keeping him.” She turned back, kissed Max again, and off she went to school.

He and his dad waited until they heard the front door open and close again.

Max took off the flannel he’d put on over a T-shirt and pulled on the white dress shirt he’d left on the back of his dad’s chair.

Kenna, luckily, hadn’t even noticed.

He buttoned it and tucked it in, then patted his front pocket just to be sure he had everything he needed.

His dad grinned like a lunatic. “How long do we wait before we follow her to town?”

“We’ll give it ten minutes, so there’s no chance we catch up to her on the road and she sees us.”

“She’s going to love this. You two... you were made for each other.”

Max knew it. “She seems really happy.”

“Today feels like she’s back to her normal life, I bet.”

“Then it’s the perfect day for what I have planned.”

“Then let’s go. I want to make sure I get a good seat.”

Chapter Forty

Kenna waved to students and said hello as she made her way to her classroom.

“Hi, Miss Baker. Welcome back,” one of her Algebra II students, Paula, called out, the other girls from the cheer squad with her smiling in greeting as she passed them in the hall.

It seemed odd to see the cheerleaders in uniform on a Monday. She’d figure out what was going on once she got caught up with the students in her first period class.

Patrice stood outside Kenna’s classroom door. “I was just delivering something to your class. How are you? You look absolutely beautiful.”

Kenna had picked the dress because it made her feel confident and pretty. She wanted her students to see her looking good and feeling well. Plus, Max liked it. “I’m excited to be back at school and to see my students. I hope my absence didn’t cause too much trouble for them or you.”

Patrice walked into the classroom ahead of her. “Thesubstitute did a wonderful job keeping the students on track. But I know they’re all excited to have you back.”

Kenna followed and dropped her stuff on her chair, smiling at the red roses in a vase on the center of her desk. She knew who they were from, but plucked the card free and opened it.

For the best teacher in the world.

I love you.

Max

“Max,” Patrice guessed, smiling knowingly.
