No one should have that kind of power, or access.

Not a person, an agency, a country, the world.

It would cause utter and complete chaos.

Just because it could be done, didn’t mean it should be done.

He’d kept that thought out of his head until it was too late.

And then he’d had to correct his mistake and someone got killed. His sister was a target. His parents, too.

He’d told Kenna to run, but he knew she wouldn’t. She wanted him to trust the FBI.

He couldn’t do that, but maybe he could use them.

His call was answered on the first ring.

“Agent Gunn.”

He couldn’t believe it had come to this. “Where are my sister and parents?”

“In protective custody. Your sister at the Wilde ranch. Your parents in a hotel somewhere safe.” Agent Gunn hoped he would take the bait and go see her.

Not going to happen, no matter how badly he’d like to see Kenna again. It was too dangerous. He’d messed up her life already.

Or maybe not if she was with Max and finally told him the truth.

He’d leave that to her.

And maybe give her a nudge, if she didn’t.

He couldn’t see her, but he could contact her. It would be tricky to get past her guards, but not impossible. A risk he was only willing to take for one last goodbye.

But they hadn’t reached that point yet.

Though it looked inevitable.

“You went back to your sister’s apartment,” the agent accused.

He couldn’t leave the key to the vault there. Not that they’d find anything in it. He’d just wanted the feds to think the program was safe in something they thought was too secure to crack. After what he’d created, they should know better than to think anything was safe anywhere.

He’d already destroyed it.

Now he was the only one capable of re-creating it.

He was the asset everyone wanted.

He was the reason his family was in jeopardy.

“I’ve made some mistakes, trying to do the right thing.” He’d thought he could hide the program, then go into hiding himself, and no one would get hurt. Naive. Stupid. A hope without a prayer of working. But he’d had to try, because the alternative sucked.

His heart broke for poor Marcus. He never meant for that to happen or for Kenna to get hurt.

“Hand over the program, go into protective custody like your parents and sister, and once we have the director and the man he hired in custody, your family won’t be in danger anymore.”

Kyle shook his head even though the agent couldn’t see him. “That’s a lie. You know it. I know it. And then what? You have the program and give it to the powers that be and they use it. That’s never going to happen. I won’t let it.” He didn’t have it anymore. But they’d have him.

Not going to happen.
