She looked at all the waiting people. “But—”

Max leaned in. “Having you here puts everyone in danger. We need to be in and out as quick as possible.”

“Then why did you bring me at all?”

“Because you need a doctor.” Max tugged her toward the cubicle where Mike and the other agent waited. The second they were near the bed, Mike closed the curtain and left them alone. Kinda. The two guards were just feet away.

“Sit,” Max ordered.

She did because she didn’t feel steady. Maybe it was dehydration and lack of sleep. Maybe it was just being so close to Max she wanted to fall right into his arms.

She sighed.

“What’s wrong?”

“Everything.”

One side of his mouth drew back in a half frown of agreement.

The doctor came in carrying a tray. She recognized him from the other night. “I hear you popped a few stitches.”

“Yeah. Sorry.”

“It happens. Let’s take a look.”

“She’s dizzy, has a headache that won’t go away. She hasn’t slept more than a couple hours the last couple days,” Max supplied.

“How do you feel, Kenna?”

“Like someone I cared about died in front of my eyes and I got slammed into a wall by two hundred plus pounds of man who won’t get out of my head.”

“She hardly eats,” Max added.

Mike pulled the curtain back for a nurse, who rolled in an IV stand.

The doctor pulled on gloves. “The IV will help. Youlost a lot of blood the other night with the head injury, which is probably making you feel tired, too. You need to eat, so your body can recover. I’d recommend some protein high in iron. A burger. A steak. Dark green veggies.”

“I got that covered,” Max assured the doc. He did raise cattle, so she’d bet he had some good beef in the freezer.

She didn’t comment, just held her arm out so the nurse could put in the IV line, then she lay down with her back to the doctor so he could look at her head.

He hissed. “This looks nasty. It’s dirty, too. What happened?”

“She bashed her head into a stall wall in the barn.”

She looked up at Max. “Tattletale.”

“We wouldn’t be here if you’d take care of yourself.”

“We’re here because my brother took something that doesn’t belong to him.”

Max shrugged a shoulder. “It sounded like he had a good reason.”

She sneered at him. “Now you’re defending him.”

“Just trying to keep things in perspective.”

The doctor cut in. “Okay, Kenna, I’ve got the wound cleaned up.”
