“Are you sure? The threat against you is still very real, even though we’re monitoring it and believe we can keep you safe. For now. But if this goes on much longer, the people involved are going to get even more desperate. You are an easy target. The one thing that can be used to lure Kyle out into the open. Then there’s your parents...” He left that hanging because she could fill in the blank. These people would use Kyle’s family to get what they wanted.

Kenna sagged against Max. “We can’t hide the rest of our lives.”

“You could, but that means sacrificing the life you have and the people in it.”

Meaning she’d have a new name, a new life. And no Max.

Agent Gunn went on. “Kyle understands what you’d have to do because of him. That’s why he’s come to the conclusion that this needs to end with him.”

She sighed out her frustration that she couldn’t come up with an alternative. “So what happens now?”

“Kyle will make the next move to end this.”

“How?”

“Hopefully he’ll bring all the players together. It’ll be a volatile and dangerous situation. He knows that going in. In the end, it will be clear, to me, to you, to those after him that it’s done, that he’s no longer an asset forthem to hold and you are not a pawn to force his cooperation.”

“So this is going to happen soon.”

“That depends on Kyle.”

Frustrated, she snapped, “You’re not very helpful.”

“Neither is your brother. He could have ended this weeks ago, but he didn’t, and Marcus died because of it.”

She gasped and covered her mouth with her hand.

“I’m sorry, Kenna, that was blunt and—”

“True,” she interrupted him. “I’m sorry, too. I want this resolved in a way that Kyle walks away from it clean. But it’s too late for that, isn’t it?”

“Yes.”

“Will you at least let me know when this is all over?”

“The only thing I can say for sure is that you won’t have agents watching you anymore once it’s done. I hope having them there has given you some peace of mind.”

“Not really. Not when you say you can’t protect Kyle if he comes in.”

“That’s different.”

“No. It’s not.”

“Fair enough. Stay safe, Kenna. This will all be over soon.”

That didn’t comfort her, because it meant she’d never see her brother again. She didn’t want to think about how he’d sacrifice himself, how his life would end to save hers.

It didn’t seem right.

She wanted to believe there had to be another way.

But even the FBI believed it had to be this way, orshe’d be in danger the rest of her life and Kyle would remain in hiding and on the run. Forever.

She truly wanted to wake up from this nightmare. But reality was more complicated than that. Her brother was in dire straits, her life in turmoil, yet she was happy and hopeful with Max.

How could everything have turned out this way?

How was it going to end?
