“And then what?”

“…I don’t know!” she yells with a whine. Her exhaustion allowing her temper to get the better of her.

Finally.

The spirited spunk I once found intoxicating coming back with a vengeance. I love it, a small glimpse of the Hailey from before shining through.

Pity it had to be after all this.

My palm slaps my thigh. “Well, at least for once, you’re being honest with me.”

Her eyes harden, steeling over. More and more of that fire comes back with every new tick of the grandfather clock at the end of the corridor.

“I’ve been nothing but honest,” she rages.

“Pfffhhh,” I mock. “Is that what you call lying to me for years then?”

“We were good.” She swallows and I know exactly what she means, and it stings more than it should. “Can we not go back to before?”

“Before what?” I snap with only pain and vengeance in my bloodstream. This is the turmoil she put there, her responsibility. “Is this before you left years ago or after you came back and I found out about our son?” I step into her, and my nostrils flare, livid. “Or are we talking about before, when you were screaming, begging for me like I was your goddamn salvation while I fucked you underneath that gazebo?”

I’m panting, humming off hot energy and desperation.

“Which is it, Hailey? You’ve left me with too many ‘befores’ to go off of. I need specifics.”

Her eyes go wide, and I despise knowing that if I wasn’t so pissed about her actions right now, I’d think the way her cheeks have flushed to the shade of crimson is adorable.

I swear she’s made me lose my mind. Gah!

Hailey’s acting as if she’s caught off guard when she shouldn’t. She’s the only one of us being dishonest. Thereissomething here between us. I know it with every fiber of my being to be true and she does too.

Her breath comes out in short, stuttered, choppy sputters. Her hands contort, fisting to her sides. Is she trembling?

“After the wedding, I’m taking Aiden back to where he belongs. We’ve overstayed our welcome as is and it’s time things get back to normal.”

The air that leaves my nostrils is futile.

“I’m not going to keep Aiden from you again, but we are going back. You and I can work out some sort of agreement once things cool down, but for now, I think we both could use some space.” She waves a hand between us to drive her point further home. “This thing, whatever it was between us, is over.”

My vision starts to haze over. Hailey’s pushed too far.

I don’t need to look in the mirror to know my face has gone the color of starched flour. If I thought she was shaking before, it was nothing compared to what I’m currently feeling.

Violent.

I’m rabid at the thought of her leaving with Aiden like this. No plans, no agreement, just…giving up.

She could’ve literally ripped my heart from my chest, and I would’ve felt less. I huff. I shouldn’t have expected anything different, not from her…

“Now,” she murmurs, sounding drained. A polar contrast to me, humming off only hot energy. “Can you please go back to your home? I’m tired, and we both deserve to try and get some sleep before tomorrow.”

I would snort at the audacity if I wasn’t so numb. How does she expect me to sleep a wink after what she’s revealed?

Hailey may be done, but I’m not.

“Answer me this one thing, Williams, andthenI’ll go.” She nods her agreement, and it’s as if I was stabbed, my voice stays so controlled.

I gulp.
