Hailey and her mom come back out carrying bowls filled with toppings. They’re finishing setting the table out on the deck with all the ingredients for our taco bar as I’m pulling the cooked chicken off the grill and slicing it.

“Mmmm,” Hailey hums her approval beside me, sniffing the works of my labor. “You all ready too?”

“Only if you’re willing to share with everyone else?” I taunt. “I know these are your favorite.”

“You did warn me your tacos were the best, but I think it’s time we let our friends in on the secret and share.”

Hailey’s dimple pops out, and my grin grows at the sight.

“You sure? I can toss these over in the sand and no one will ever have to know of their epicness.”

She mulls this over for a moment, and I swear I grow more in love with her because of it. Amusement dances in her eyes and then she shakes her head. “Come on. They’re all waiting.”

Hailey’s always been protective of things she cares about, and food is something she and I have in common. It ranks high on both of our lists.

“I hope these are good,” Dad announces once we’re all seated, and he’s filling his plate at the head of the table opposite me. “Hailey’s been hyping them up all afternoon.”

My hand finds William’s knee under the table, and I give it a squeeze and she winks in response.

There is nothing better than this.

My friends, my family, the beach, and my girl all around one table together? I couldn’t ask for anything more.

Hailey sighs beside me as if she can read my thoughts and is in agreement.

“I love you,” she murmurs, only loud enough for me to hear.

I kiss her temple. “I love you and our little family more.”

Always.
