What the heck is his problem?

“Here…” I suggest, shoving my full flute toward her. Finn takes that too, firing it back with the same enthusiasm as if we were doing shots at a club.

“Ahh,” he announces with a satisfied sigh as the empty glass is slammed back onto the table. He wipes at his mouth with the back of his hand and then, with too much confidence, says, “Hello, ladies.”

Rory follows his lead, only her sigh is more out of frustration mixed with confusion. It’s definitely leaning more on the side of annoyance though.

I ogle him, tongue at the ready to ask again what his problem is, but he cuts me off. Motherfucker—

“Lil Sis,” Finn starts, overjoyed and with too much pizzazz. My eyes narrow, I don’t by the sudden interest. “I haven’t gotten to tell you congratulations yet. You look beautiful, almost like you’re…glowing…”

My brows crease and my nose pinches. Weird choice of words, but okay.

Straightening my posture, I do my best to overlook him. I continue on with the discussion Rory and I were having before we wererudelyinterrupted.

First things first… “What were we thinking for dresses? Style, shape…color?”

I swear if Rory mentions denim again—

“Lil Sis will look great in whatever she chooses,” Finn remarks, instantly coming to her defense. He’s acting as if I was attacking her andnotasking about her attire for the wedding.

This is the first time we’ve spoken to each other—more accurately, he’s spokenaroundme—in a little under three years and it awakens something inside me.

He’s belittling me and has made his disgust evident since I arrived, but even so, I don’t know.

A hunk of rock settles in my stomach. Finn’s too close. His stance is nearer to my side of this small, circular table than Rory’s. I’m positive it’s unintentional, but my awareness betrays me. He smells just as I remember, like Maplewood, mint, and with a dash of nutmeg mixed in.

My mouth coils, it’s too overwhelming. Too much of a reminder of what we were…what we had.

I convert that chunk of rock into rubble.

You can love someone, but beinginlove with them is a myth. My parents’ divorce taught me that the hard way. Their separation was pivotal in my withdrawal.

Thankfully, a waiter walking by helps divert my awareness and the memories. The goodandthe bad.

“Perfect,” I singsong, setting down two fresh glasses.

This time when Finn reaches Rory’s hand, quick speed has him getting there first. “Enough,” she growls.

“I’m only looking out for you, Lil Sis,” he responds, baffled by her abruptness.

“I know my limits and am more than capable of handling myself just fine,” she miffs back.

“You sure your doctor would approve of this?” Finn grates, grabbing at the stem and pulling it back toward him. “Or is it too soon for that?” he questions with clenched teeth.

She tugs it back, unwilling to give in. “What are you talking about?”

“What areyou?” he asks, yanking roughly. The liquid sloshes back and forth in distress. “You shouldn’t be drinking.”

“Why not?”

Finn scoffs like it’s obvious. “You’re being ridiculous. Let. Go.”

“Me?” she mocks. “You’re the one who came over and started acting like a child,” Rory accuses, jerking her arm once more.

His eyes widen before thinning to slits. “That’s rich coming from you.”

What is going on right now?
