“You…can’t…have…this…” he snaps victoriously like the flute has crossed some sort of imaginary line and is back at his side.

“Why?”

“Because…” Finn enunciates sternly, like either of us should know what it means.

“Because why?” she pushes.

Rory is too caught up in her own frustration to see past anything other than her own anger. If she did, she’d notice the tightness that’s settled along Finn’s cheekbones.

His defiance as adamant as his refusal to back down on this.

“Because you are, you’re…” His voice softens a fraction, but it’s not any less sure. “…Pregnant!”

Hot chills break out across my entire body. They start at my scalp and move all the way down to my toes.

The only thing not frozen in place are my eyes and those aren’t doing me any favors either. Finn’s outburst carries enough volume that it’s stunned the entire party into a very awkward silence. This includes his very floored, very enraged sister.

With remarkable strength, Rory is the first to move out of everyone. With zest, she grabs the glass by the rim and tilts her head back, swallowing down the champagne in a similar fashion to her brother earlier.

She takes mine and does the same as if to further prove her point.

“I’m not pregnant,” she says, ignoring the eyes of everyone else but her sibling. “Why would you think that?”

Finn shrugs, righting his stance. His posture expresses he’s got nothing left to lose, so why not?

“Cole found the stuffed rabbit in your bag before you left.”

Rory’s mouth flattens into a line at the confession. That and the brief way her eyes flick toward her fiancé and back are the only insight into where her head is. Everything else in her is collected and refined.

That’s fine though, because I feel as if I’m carrying every single emotion for the both of us. Despair. Rage. Remorse. Empathy. I have them all.

My joints have stiffened to the point that a small breeze could pass by, and I’d snap in half.If I could only be so lucky.

No, no, no.No!

This can’t be happening right now.

When I was ready, that was the agreement, my one condition. I’m not prepared. But is anyone ever when it comes to this sort of thing?

Everyone’s watching them, but it may as well be me. The weighted intensity is as suffocating and restricting as trying to breathe while underwater.

I shouldn’t have come. Rory coaxed me and I should’ve let her have a stupid beach wedding.

I’m not ready.

Rory’s posture shifts, angling toward my side of the table. It’s not a lot, but it’s all that’s needed for Finn’s heated stare to transfer from her to me. He knows his sister well enough, and I get screwed over because of it.

I’m not mad at her for it, but this still sucks. Overall, would not recommend it.

“What isn’t she saying?” He glares murderously. Finn is talking directly to me for the first time all evening. Heck! Years are more accurate.

The intensity of his gaping is almost as nerve-racking as the strain of his jaw. It’s so taut I’m not sure how he hasn’t cracked a tooth.

If Rory hadn’t drunk all our liquid courage, I’d be following the theme of the evening and shooting it back. I don’t, so I go for it.

Well, sorta.

“Rory isn’t pregnant, and neither am I.” I swallow. “Not anymore.”
