I’m mesmerized, trapped, transfixed by the way his mouth moves, and then…he ruins it. “You know, these aren’t even that good.”

“Sour gummy worms are a delicacy,” I declare, peeved, pulling away.

The audacity!

His mouth curves, and Jesus, even his swallow, is sexy as fuck. The smirk though? It’s full of bait and vigor, and I’m helpless in the trap.

“Delicacy?” He snorts, tilting his head back and spraying his mouth full of whipped cream. He gulps, ingesting it. “More like irrelevancy.”

My eyes go wide. “Sour gummy worms do not deserve this type of ridicule.”

“Oh yeah?”

“Yeah!”

“Whatcha gonna do about it then?” Finn challenges, tipping his head to one side and pouting. He’s mocking, far too entertained by all this.

My cheeks puff, hollowing out before filling back again. Irritation burns hot in my veins. The slow, taunting expression that creeps across his face is my undoing.

“This!” I screech, grabbing at the closest thing I can find. Rapid fire, I squirt a bottle of chocolate syrup his way. Large droplets of gooey sweetness now coat the tips of his hair, his cheeks, nose, chin, and the entirety of his shirt.

I snort a laugh before it’s dried to my airwaves.

“No,” I warm, wagging a finger as he raises the aerosol can, pointing it in my direction.

“Ah, come on, baby.” Words as grating as they are teasing. “Fair is fair.”

I squeal out my surprise, continuing to dash my way around the island, doing my best to shield myself as he presses down on the nozzle, chasing me around with the whipped cream.

“You’re in for it now, Williams,” he rages, keeping pace with me. His eyes are ablaze with equal parts humor and stunned fury at what I’d done.

Lapping the island, I do my best to throw him off by tossing a handful of brightly colored sprinkles his way. It has the opposite effect. The empty can of whip cream forgotten, his arm longer, faster, as it snakes around me from behind, shoving my back to his front.

I’m laughing so hard I can barely breathe, even as Finn smashes a handful of chocolate chips into my hair. Him adding to his own masterpiece of the frothy mess from before. I’m wheezing so hard I swear my eyelids are sweating.

It feels good, really, really good.

Spinning quick as a flash, my front is now smashed between Finn’s thighs and the lower part of my spine to the counter. My laughter dies with the part of my mouth at the closeness. There’s less than an inch of space between us. Chest to chest.

“Why’d you do that?”

“I don’t know,” I admit honestly.

Suddenly we’re both panting, winded but for completely different reasons. I blame mine on the intensity of his stare, but what’s his excuse?

The air between us shifts again. Even covered in a confetti of chocolate and rainbow sprinkles, he’s striking. I reach, touching a lock of his hair, and push it back from his forehead. I swear I hear his breath still right there in his lungs.

My blood pumps faster, wild and untamed, his pounding the same.

The muscles in his cheeks strain, his jaw aching with the same tension. It’s so strong. Easily I witness this underneath the chocolate mess.

Suddenly I’m unsure of everything. My world shifts, tilting completely from its axis. I must be losing my mind because I want him to kiss me. There’s nothing else I want more.

The air is thick, the fervor thrilling.

I want this. I want this so bad; I hardly feel myself break. The confusion silenced to this moment. The panic muddled to this thing growing, sprouting the more I let him back in. I thought it happened slowly, but it’s not true at all.

For so long, I’d shut him out, forgotten, but now I realize that, like a bloom, I’d only gone dormant. Hibernating myself from not only him but the world. Finn is the light as much as he is the oxygen. I see this now, I understand, I—
