“I know what you need.”

I do too…

He bows closer, hands locked to the counter on either side of my hips. His lips are right here. One subtle shift and he can give me what I want.

“Perfect,” Finn says, dusting his hands together, satisfied after plucking a cherry by its stem and putting it on top of my head.

My heart pitter-patters and then it dies.

Devastation runs like a bleak trail from my spine all the way to my toes. Embarrassment and pure mortification are a close second. The mess on the floor becomes very interesting.

“Not ready for that yet?”

“What?” I hiccup.

“The cherry,” he informs. “You only put that on once you’re sure you’re ready. Are you not?” His arms extend, glancing at his clothes as he wiggles his hips in a way that I’d find funny if I wasn’t so distraught. “I think I have a few spots that you missed.”

My throat’s locked, voice buried in my shoes. It’s caked there with the rest of our sticky mess. Is he legitimately only discussing our sundae-making wreckage right now?

I force a smile, even if it’s empty. “No, you’re right. I was finished.” Then I reach around and grab the entire bowl of maraschino cherries and dump them over his head.

Finn’s tongue pokes out, wiping around his mouth. “Perfect.”

…We could’ve been.

Shewasn’tready.Haileythought she was, but all I needed to see was the moment of hesitation in those brown eyes of hers and I knew. She’s a tease, but not definite.

An addicting, annoying, irritating-as-all-fucktemptress. One I can’t seem to get enough of. Whenever she’s around, everything else evaporates and when she’s not, I find myself looking for excuses to see them both.

My limbs tingle with awareness. Speaking of the too-sexy minx…

“You know, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say I had a stalker,” I say, bouncing on my toes right as the basketball leaves my hands.

“And ifIdidn’t know any better, I’d say you finally learned how to make a free throw.” Humor swims in Hailey’s voice as she comes up beside me.

Both of us watch as the ball sleekly sinks into the hole of the hoop. The same exact way it’s been going for the entire morning. The last few days if you want to get technical.

“Is it too soon to ask for a percentage of your payout when you go pro?” Her eyes light up, snagging the ball I just grabbed. She tucks it protectively under her arm, proud. “It seems I’ve become your good luck charm,” she notes cockily and it’s adorable.

Truth is, she’s always cute. Moments like these only make it more prominent.

My tongue scrapes my teeth, hooking higher to my left. “That so, Williams?”

Swiftly, I pop the ball from underneath her arm and take it back. Spinning it, I switch off my hands as the ball circles my waist.

I reach out a hand, holding the ball back between us. “How much do you think you’re worth?”

Resolve lights up her features. She hadn’t been expecting me to agree with her or for me to take the ball back so freely and then offer it up once more.

Hailey’s arms extend, but I’m quicker and pop the ball right over her head and recatch it effortlessly. My shoulders bounce in silent laughter when her hair whips across her face with haste. Her hands ball into fists at her sides.

Ah-dor-able.

“You’ve been out here a lot lately.”
