So he curled his hand around hers. “Anything could take you from me. I thought it would best to be the one who did it. So I could control it. I can control everything, except the whims of fate.”

“Lysias—”

“Allow me to finish, Alexandra. Zandra. So much was taken from me, I decided to take from everyone else. But I wish not to take from you. Only give. For twenty years, I locked old, violent memories away. But also the good ones. Being back at the palace reminded me. Of warmth. Of love. The deep and true kind my parents had for one another and me. And the kind I have for you.”

Her expression remained calm, but she sucked in a sharp breath.

“I love you, Al, Alexandra, Zandra, Princess. Whatever name you choose. If you take my last name, I will call you whatever you wish.”

She swallowed before she spoke, tears glistening in his eyes. “We haven’t even discussed that you saved my life not once but twice.”

“Ah,asteri mou, but you have saved my heart.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead. “So I must thank you.”

“You should probably also ask me nicely to be your wife. And smile prettily while you do it.”

“No, I will not ask nicely.” At her scowl, he bent down onto his knees. “I will beg you, my love.”

Her smile bloomed.

“Be my wife. Through all the wonderful things I will ensure life gives us, and through all that life will no doubt take from us. I promise, I will not run away from you ever again. You are my star, my heart, my princess.”

The tears that shone in her eyes fell to her cheeks, and she knelt too—so they were knee to knee, hands clutching each other. “I will be all those things, Lysias. And more we cannot imagine yet. But what the future holds does not matter. As long as we are together.”

“Forever, asteri mou. Forever.” And he sealed this promise with a kiss.
