‘I’ve really missed you.’ He breathed unevenly. ‘Have you missed me?’

Caught between wanting to be cool and longing to be truthful, Maude gave a jerky nod.

She was going to marry this man and, like it or not, her heart was bursting with love and desire.

They didn’t make it back to London. They made it out of the town, Mateo driving steadily with Maude’s hand on his thigh, stroking in a way that made him clench his teeth as his erection pulsed steadily against the zipper. The first two villages they came to had offered nothing in terms of accommodation but the third had a pub with a sign advertising rooms and they made it in fast.

Small pub, small room, small bed...neither cared.

Mateo was stripping off the second the bedroom door was shut behind him. Maude’s hands scrabbled over him, touching him everywhere, his chest, his shoulders, tracing the path down to where his erection was thick and rock-hard.

He couldn’t get her clothes off fast enough and, as he stripped her of them, he whispered to her, voice thick with desire, stuff that made her skin burn and sent every pore in her body into instant, sizzling meltdown.

They stumbled their way to the bed and it creaked underneath them.

Her clothes were half-on, half-off, a barrier to his hands, which she wanted all over her.

‘No need for protection,’ he murmured as they fell on the bed, both naked, both hot for one another. ‘It’s liberating.’

‘Yet we’re here!’ Maude laughed breathlessly. ‘I’m having a baby, so it’s safe to say we’ve been liberated before.’

‘Touché.’

His hot gaze brushed her. He knelt and could only stare at her, lying naked for his hungry perusal. He rested his hand on her stomach.

‘Have you...changed?’ he asked.

‘Changed how?’

‘Your body. Does it feel different?’

Maude half-closed her eyes and thought that this might not be the real deal in terms of all her youthful dreams being realised—this might not be the fairy-tale ending she had always secretly longed for—but right now, with his dark eyes resting on her with interest and concern, things felt good.

He cared. Maybe not for her, but one hundred percent for the baby, and half a loaf was better than none at all.

‘A bit. My...’ she blushed ‘...my breasts are more sensitive,’ she admitted. ‘And I’ve gone off certain things. Coffee makes me feel a little sick...’

‘Sensitive breasts,’ Mateo murmured. He rounded them with his hands. ‘They feel bigger.’

Maude laughed and went hot all over at the rampant hunger in his eyes as they rested on her.

‘And they’ll only get bigger.’ She sighed. ‘I’ll look like a zeppelin.’

Mateo burst out laughing. ‘Can’t wait.’

Their love-making was slow, tender and thorough, making up for lost time, invigorated by a dimension to their relationship that hadn’t been there before.

He touched her slowly, as though they had all the time in the world. He made her feel special. She wondered whether, subconsciously, he wanted to prove to her that what he had said was true—that they could have a good life together even though he didn’t love her the way she wanted him to.

Afterwards, they lay curled into one another until he reminded her that there was still a little drive to London to do.

‘Or we could just stay here,’ he murmured. ‘Now that you’ve reminded me of how much I’ve been missing, I might not be able to make it back to London without another stop somewhere.’

‘I think we can manage it,’ Maude murmured.

They did. Back to his place, which was another testament to his rise up the ladder, a marvel of blond wood, abstract art and pale furnishings.

It had been insightful of him to purchase the cottage, Maude thought as she walked around, running her hands along the white leather sofa and plunging her bare feet into the springy pale rugs. A toddler would wreak havoc in a place like this.
