Maren’s face gave her away. She was hiding something else. “Poison,” she said under her breath. “That bitch.”

She turned again, ready to shoot Poison again. With one hand, I caught her and stopped her. I was tired of being in the dark.

I still had my weapon pointed at Gimp, but my voice, directed at Maren, was more than stern. “Do you plan to tell me what’s going on? What do you have of your ex-boyfriends that’s so damn important that the Gods in Arkansas would ignore the fact you killed their President?”

Maren glared at me, her blue eyes flashing with rage. “I don’t have a thing of Ax’s. You don’t need to know everything right now. Not with all the trouble we’re in.”

“Bullshit,” I replied, my frustration growing. “We’re in this together. I promised I wouldn’t take you to the fucking gallows. I deserve to know what’s going on.”

She shook her head, her long hair whipping around in the wind. Somehow, in the midst of everything, it had come down.

I gritted my teeth, feeling a surge of anger. “You need to stop keeping secrets from me.”

“We don’t have time for this.” Ignoring me completely, Maren shifted into her biker persona.

She became Treasure as she ordered Gimp around. She told him to get Poison to the hospital and make sure she never saw her again after that.

The biker obeyed.

“We have to get out of here,” she said to me, going to my Harley. “We can talk when we get back to Galveston.”

I started to argue but knew I had to go back to my motel, at least to get my leathers if not my cut. It was a long ride back to Tennessee, if I planned to hide Maren and go turn myself in. But we couldn’t leave a dead body out in an alley.

“We’re going to have to get rid of Beef first,” I said.

Reluctantly, Maren agreed to help me drag him and bury him under some nearby rubble. After we hid his body, Treasure called her Cleaner to take care of the rest.

Speckled in Beef’s blood, we rode off. I wasn’t sure what I planned to do. But I needed answers from Maren, and I would have them.

Chapter 9

Leviathan

My mind wouldn’t settle on the ride. Speeding down the highway, the wind in my face, I ran everything over in my head. Maren had something of her ex-boyfriends that the Gods in Arkansas wanted pretty badly. They were willing to take her alive. What the hell could it be? Money? Information? Drugs?

Then the realization hit me like a ton of bricks. Maren was pregnant. With Ax’s child.

No, she said it wasn’t his.

With my child?

It all made sense. Something had been different about her. She was softer than usual, heavier but not in an off-putting way. The woman glowed. I recognized the radiance of pregnancy. Furthermore, I realized there was more to her, deep down, but couldn’t put my finger on it.

Wound with the implications of this newfound knowledge, I could barely operate the machine beneath me. If my plan worked, we would be on the run, with danger lurking around every corner. And now, we had a baby to think about.

Slowing down, I pulled over on the darkening highway. A semi honked as it sped past. I rolled us further away from the traffic, off the shoulder, into the grass where it was safe. The noise from the interstate was still too much. Cutting the engine, I turned to Maren, my heart racing.

“Are you…?” I trailed off, unable to form the words.

Maren stared at me, her face softening. “Yes,” she said simply. “I’m three months pregnant.”

A wave of emotion about swept me over. Excitement, fear, and a fierce protectiveness all mingled together knocked me back. Warmth swelled in my chest.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, my voice faltering.

“You came to Texas to kill me,” she replied. But that wasn’t all. Her eyes clouded with gloom as she tore her gaze from me. “I didn’t want to burden you with this. Not when you have so much to worry about. And I don’t plan to keep it.”

Based on our conversations before about her other child, that didn’t sound at all like her. I shook my head, feeling a gust of resentment. “You can’t just keep something like this from me,” I said, my voice rising. “You can’t just go and do that. Not without discussing it with me.”
