Seneca knew that Houston dialect always came out of me heavy when my nerves were on edge, especially when I had to deal with a fuck up from somebody that was close to me that I didn’t want to kill. Family fucked up. People we loved fucked up. This wasn’t a normal situation. However, he needed to just sacrifice his fucking self so we could get past the shit.

“You good, nigga?”

I turned around to see Law and Vegas coming through the fence. “I’m about to have to get outta here to smoke something. Law, when you got back?”

“A lil bit ago. I heard one of those niggas been taken care of.”

“Yep. Van’s demise gon’ come soon. You riding out with me to smoke?”

“Yeah.”

“A’ight. Let me tell Chelsea that I’ll be back.”

When I walked in the house, they were about to eat. Looked like I would be sitting with my family and eating before I left.My family. That shit sounded good as hell. I went back to the patio and invited Law and Vegas inside to eat. After getting back to the kitchen, I introduced Law to everyone. The only people he’d previously met was Jericho and Chelsea. I also introduced Kaysyn to Vegas. He knew who she was, but she’d never met him.

Chelsea came to me and kissed my lips, so I told her, “Me and Law gon’ head out after dinner to take a ride.”

“Okay. When you come back, I have something to tell you.”

“Naw. Tell me now.”

“Van texted me, wanting to talk.”

As if I weren’t boiling already, that shit had my fucking blood evaporating. “What the fuck he want?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t called. I wanted to tell you so you can tell me what you wanted me to do about that.”

Knowing that she was versed on my world only made her more attractive. She wasn’t trying to do shit behind my back. She knew how important it was for her to keep me in the know with that muthafucka. “A’ight, baby. We’ll call him when I get back. I need to smoke to calm my fucking nerves. Seneca ran me hot a minute ago. Your brother gon’ fuck him up. Hopefully, it won’t be bad enough to send that nigga to the hospital. I told him that he was gon’ have to take his ass whupping like a man.”

She tilted her head back and puckered her lips, as if what I said didn’t make her no never mind. I didn’t believe it did. She didn’t know anybody here as well as we did. There was only one person I believed she genuinely cared for, and that was Isaiah. I leaned over a bit and kissed her soft ass lips. “Despite everything that’s happened, this is by far the happiest day of my life.”

“I can only imagine, baby. I’m happy that you’re happy. I know what I said to you earlier about everything going well, but I still expected some crazy shit to go down today. Kaysyn surprised me.”

“I told her that we could have like a joint custody with Jericka. I believe we’ll be extremely close. Everything she told me had tears falling from my eyes. She’s so misunderstood… somewhat like me.”

“You ain’t misunderstood… not to the people who love you. I know how your mind works and why.”

Chelsea was somewhat immature, but that was totally understandable. With limited access to the outside world and enduring the bullshit she did, she hadn’t matured the way she should have. Instead of being a thirty-year-old woman, she was mentally maybe a twenty-one-year-old when it came to certain things. I knew I just needed to be patient with her. She would adjust and mature in areas that she was deprived from experiencing soon enough.

“Oh you do, huh?”

“Mm hmm. I’m gon’ prove it to you as soon as I can. I know you may have to sleep in the room with Jericka until she’s comfortable, but you best believe I’m gon’ sneak you out of there once she’s asleep and give you just what I know you need.”

She kissed my lips as Manman said, “Come on, lovebirds. I’ve fixed your plates.”

Chelsea smiled and walked away. I followed behind her and lightly swatted her ass. I sat next to Jericho, and I could see he was still bothered. “Cool out, man. He knows to expect an ass whupping. I told him better be grateful that’s all he gon’ get. He deserve worse for his betrayal and disloyalty.”

Jericho nodded as Whitney set a bowl of stew in front of him. “Yeah. He better thank God for my niece and that he had my back when I was trying to keep my sister and Mama safe. All that shit still holds weight. Lucky for him, he told that attorney straight lies about my sister. Being that there aren’t any records of her rape or imprisonment, it’s all hearsay. So I can understand why that lawyer took his word for that. He should have known that the attorney would use that information in court. Did he think we would blame Kaysyn?”

“I don’t know, but in order for her to know details, he would have had to be the one to tell her. So all fingers would have pointed back to his ass.”

“Mr. Jungle?”

I turned my attention to Jericka as she smiled big. Man, she was the cutest lil girl. I’d never been up close to royalty, but I swore she looked like a princess. “What’s up, lil mama?”

“Are you my biological dad?”

I almost swallowed my tongue. I knew this was definitely a conversation I wanted no parts of. Jericho’s eyebrows lifted, and he turned his head. I grabbed her hand and kissed it. “No, ma’am, I’m not.”
