I frowned slightly. “What makes you think that? Have you seen her recently?”

Although I asked him the question, I already felt like I knew the answer. I believed she was in love with me too. That was her main reason for pulling away from me and why it suddenly became too much for her. “I saw her earlier today at Kroger. She didn’t have her usual smile on her face. I just wanted to check on her for you. I can tell you miss her.”

I slid my hand down my face as my phone chimed with a text. When I saw it was from Kennedy, I slightly rolled my eyes.Hey, baby. Call me when you have time.

“She ain’t the one. You know that, and so does Chelsea.”

I looked up from my phone at Vegas, and he gave me a smirk and walked off. Before I could respond to her, Jericho messaged in the Watchful Eyes thread. It’s about to go down tomorrow morning. Hopefully all goes well.

It was about fucking time. He had a connect at Pollock that would be able to handle Knowledge. That fucker had been sliding by for way too long. They should havebeencalled the hit. Had Alexz been my sister, I would have found a way to kill that nigga before he could even get to Pollock. I didn’t bother responding to the text. I was more than sure a meeting would be called soon.

As I was about to make my way back inside, I decided to call Kennedy. Within two rings, she answered. “Hey.”

“What’s up?”

“I’m going to be in Houston again this weekend. If you have time, can I have a do over? My daughter is going to stay with my cousin.”

“I have a wedding to attend.”

“Can I go with you?”

I thought about Chelsea for a moment, then said, “Let me think about it.”

“Please let me know. I really feel bad about this past weekend.”

I took a deep breath and said, “I’ll let you know.”

I ended the call on her. I still had a bad taste in my mouth about this past weekend. As Vegas had said, I knew she wasn’t the one. The connection I had to Chelsea was everything I needed. I swore that woman soothed my demons. There were days where I would be in a funk thinking about Ice and Mega, and she would call with her bullshit. Whenever I was in my feelings about my mama, she would pop up to hang out with me.

Maybe I needed her as much as she seemed to need me. For some reason though, I felt like as soon as I went beyond friendship with her, some shit would pop off, and I could either hurt her or she hurt me. Not only that… I didn’t want to be in a relationship with her and have something mess around and happen to me on these Houston streets. Those niggas took out Ice and Mega and tried to take out Fawn. What was keeping them from trying to get at me? Although those camps had been dismantled since then, there could be another one rising up at any given moment.

I made my way back inside the warehouse and grabbed some paperwork. I was putting the barbershop up for sale. We’d gotten our money out of that nigga, then I laid his ass to rest. It shouldn’t have even had to come to that. I slapped hands with a couple of niggas, then Vegas and I headed to the house.

The minute we got there, I retreated to my office to call my sister. She was still living in Atlanta, and no matter how long she’d been there, I still wasn’t used to it. After flopping on the couch, I hit her face icon. “Hey, Jungle!”

“Hey, baby. How you doing?”

“Good. How’s everything going out there?”

“It’s cool. Just squared up on the last bit of business at the barbershop the other night. How’s Law and the boys?”

“They’re good. You sure you good though? You don’t sound like yourself.”

“Yeah. I’m cool.”

“Hmm. Let me call Chelsea to go over there and see for me. She’ll tell me the real.”

I rolled my eyes. “Good luck with that.”

I could imagine that she was frowning and about to go off in three… two… one…

“What the fuck you mean good luck with that? What the fuck you did to her, Jungle?”

“Why I had to do something though? Why it couldn’t be her ass?”

“Because I know you. Yo’ feet still crusty and shit? That shit probably had her running scared. Please tell me you done started putting lotion on that shit.”

“Shut up, Fawn. She said she can’t be cool with me no more. I haven’t talked to her since Saturday night.”
