Didn’t he want more?

Didn’t he wantme?

Didn’t he—

“Ohhh,” I moaned into his mouth as he slowly moved his hips, dragging his erection over my core.

He halted, and then pulled his lips from mine.

I couldn’t help the soft groan that escaped me at the absence of his tongue.

“You’re drunk,” he growled at me, as if he’d just realized it.

“Not really. Only had a few glasses,” I whispered, tugging his face down toward mine. His palm left the back of my head, landing on my hand and pressing tightly so my fingers dug into his cheek.

“I don’t even know if you consciously want this,” he said to me.

Hurt curled in my abdomen. “That’s not fair. I’ve been trying to get you to notice me for months.”

“I always noticed you.” His voice was low. “We can’t do this until you’re sober, Mariah.”

My eyes narrowed at him.

“Where are you sleeping tonight?” His gaze jerked in the direction of the rave my friends and I had put together. “Whose home are you sharing?”

Fury coursed through me, and I yanked my hands away from his face. “Put me down.”

He growled at me, but a moment later, set me on my feet.

Too angry to tell him that he was being a jackass, or that he’d offended me by just assuming so easily that I’d sleep with another man, I just walked away from him.

He stalked behind me. “Mariah.”

“No,” I shot back. “You don’t get to ‘Mariah’me and assume it works like an apology. It doesn’t.”

He huffed out a breath, catching up to me quickly and walking at my side. “I shouldn’t have said that.”

“No, you shouldn’t have. I had a few drinks, yes, but I amnotdrunk. And it’s not like I was kissing a bunch of guys or even flirting with any of them. I told that fae at the party that I wanted to make you jealous so you would pull your head out of your ass, and he agreed. He wasnotinto me.”

“Male fae are into anyone with breasts,” he argued.

“Well, he knew I wasn’t interested in him, because I told him that plainly. So back off,” I shot back.

He walked beside me in silence for a few moments before finally admitting, “I’ve been bordering on insanity for too long. I’m sorry.”

“Trust is a required part of any relationship, Ervo. I don’t expect you to trust me completely after five minutes, but it’s a dick move to accuse me of planning on sleeping with someone else right after making out with you.”

He let out a slow breath. “I assumed you were rejecting me, all this time. When you scoffed at my explanations, it seemed like a rejection. Keeping my cool in the face of repeated reminders that the female I wanted wasn’t interested in me was not easy. It’ll take me time to wrap my head around all that’s happened, to see that I was wrong.”

My throat swelled.

I understood why he had felt that way. Hadn’t I felt it too?

“I’m sorry,” I admitted.

“As am I.”

There was another brief silence, but this time, it wasn’t uncomfortable. With the music playing loudly in the distance as we walked toward it, it was actually kind of peaceful.
