“He looks chipper,” Pat says, playfully wiggling her eyebrows at me. She can probably tell how tense I am.

“So happy,” I reply back, and she giggles.

“Your eyes look fantastic like this. They are the perfect shade for this color.” She dabs a few more times with the brush and then stands back to survey her work. “Now, eyelashes or no eyelashes?”

“Don’t I already have eyelashes?” I crane to look in the mirror and make sure they didn’t fall off in the middle of the night.

“I’m talking about false ones, dear,” she says, blowing out a breath. “Have you never worn them before?”

“Nope.” I pop the P and sigh. “Don’t plan on starting today.”

“Of course. We will save those for a date night when you want to be a real stunner.” She winks and moves back to her supplies.

I grimace. I hate lying to all these people. They all think we are actually trying to make a connection, but in reality, I’m an employee because he was in a bind. No hearts involved.

I glance back over to the doorway, but Simon is gone.

“Now, how was your first night together?” Janet asks us.

I fidget, uncomfortable in my chair.

Well, Janet, I pissed Simon off and went to sleep drunk and by myself. How was your night?

“Relaxing,” I say instead of what I’m thinking. “We hung out and talked by the pool. Simon can make a mean vodka lemonade. He says it’s a secret recipe, and he wouldn’t tell me the secret.”

I grin over at him even though it’s the last thing I want to do. His eyes meet mine with a flash, and I hold my smile, his thoughts unreadable in the deep golden brown of his eyes.

“Some secrets aren’t meant to be told,” he says, still looking at me before turning back to Janet, who titters as if that were the funniest thing anyone had ever said.

Seriously, where did they find this lady?

But his meaning is pretty damn clear—don’t ask anything else about my ex-wife.

Roger that.

“But I will consider it further on down the road.” This time, Simon is looking back at the cameras with a grin that causes my heart to stutter.

“Are you saying there is a further down the road for you two?” Janet asks, and my eyes widen.

“Now, it’s a little early to tell, but I think we are getting along great,” Simon says casually, his elbow propped on the armrest as he rests his chin on his hand and stares over at me. “What do you think, Alice?”

My name rolling off his tongue sends a shiver up my spine.

“I agree; we seem to be a perfect match.”

Looks like I can bullshit with the best of them.
