Chapter Ten

Simon

“How’s it going, man?”

I welcome Jarod’s voice in my ear instead of stewing over my own thoughts. My friend and fellow surgeon at the hospital has been with me through thick and thin. We went to medical school together, did our fellowship together, and now, we work together. He’s seen me at my best and at my worst, so I trust his opinion on my current predicament.

“It’s going. Why didn’t they choose you for this shit?”

“I’m already married,” Jarod says with a chuckle. “Don’t think Sara would have appreciated that much.”

“Yeah, you are probably right. How’s work?”

“It’s good. Got a few new cases. Miss seeing you around, man,” he says.

I sink into the chair in the corner of the living room. I glance around for a second, wondering where Alice is, but then shake my head and focus on my conversation.

“Yeah, I’ll be back in tomorrow. We film at the beginning of the week, and then I get to return to normal until the next week. This whole thing is a shitshow.”

“We are all waiting for Friday. We’re going to have a viewing party.”

“You’re fucking with me,” I say on a growl.

A guffaw of laughter comes through my phone, and I lean back, laying my head against the top of the chair, and stare up at the ceiling.

“Nope. Sara is making appetizers and everything. You and Alice should come.”

“No.”

“Think on it,” he says, his easygoing nature shining through.

We are complete opposites; it’s a wonder we are friends.

“How is it, living with someone you don’t know?”

“I know her. Knew her. I don’t know. Weird.” I groan and shut my eyes. “I’m not ready for this.”

“It’s been years, man. You’ve got to move on at some point.”

“I’ve moved on from her,” I lie. “I just don’t have any desire to be in another relationship.”

“Yeah, I get that. Is she in your room?”

“Hell no. Guest room. I hired her as my nanny.”

Silence.

“Shit, Morrow. Your nanny? And she said yes?”

“Yeah, she was Ivy’s teacher last year. It was the perfect solution to Vicky leaving.”

“You got balls, man,” Jarod says.

I chuckle. “Why do you say that?”

“She was probably expecting love at first sight, and you gave her the cold shoulder.”

“She said yes. I don’t see what the issue is. She knows how it is. We fake it during filming and leave each other alone after.”
