“So, you’re not paying him, and this nonsense wouldn’t hold up in court?” I had to make sure I was clear about what was transpiring.

“Yeah, but it took me some time to hear from my attorney because he was on vacation, and I didn’t want to talk to anyone else. Now it’s just a matter of making sure Marc leaves for good.”

I huffed. “Even though you should have told me about Marc, I was dealing with Wagner, so I understand why you waited.”

“And the society?”

I joined Kane on the edge of the bed. “Can I help you run it? As long as everyone knows that you’re mine, then I think it would be fun to use the rooms, vet the girls, and maybe even come up with new ideas.”

Kane swept his thumb along my lower lip. “That was not what I expected you to say. Like at all.” He flashed me a grin. “Let me talk to the guys, but I like the idea of you as my queen.”

“Me, too.” I crawled onto his lap and straddled him. “I think packing can wait for a little bit.” I rocked my hips against his growing erection. “Is there anything else you need to tell me?”

A flicker of an unrecognizable emotion danced across his face. “Not at the moment.” He leaned forward and kissed me as his hands slipped beneath my sweatshirt and up my back. I melted into him, ready to feel him inside of me.

The wind whipped my hair into my face as I hurried across the soggy, green lawn to the library. Marc had agreed to meet me there. Kane had insisted on a public meeting if I wouldn’t let him stick around. I loved Kane for being protective, but in order to have a candid conversation with Marc, I didn’t need my jealous boyfriend lurking nearby.

Feeling empowered, I hurried up the steps, clutching my coat closed. For some dumb reason, I hadn’t zipped it, and the wind was blowing the rain sideways, soaking me.

I flung the door open to the building, then wiped my feet on the mat. The squeak of my shoes filled the hall as I walked across the tile floor to the library’s entrance.

The familiar scent of books greeted me with open arms, and I paused, appreciating the moment.

I quickly spotted Marc at a table in the corner, and I hurried to him.

“Hi,” I said, pulling out a chair across from him and sitting down, ready to get this over with.

His eyes lit up. “Thanks for calling.”

“Sure. I wanted to chat with you.” I set my purse on the seat next to me. “Kane talked to me.”

Marc’s expression faltered, then he caught himself. “Did he send you to try to talk me out of suing him?”

I offered him a smile. “No. It was my idea to meet with you. Marc, we have history together, and I understand that you miss me, but this isn’t the way to my heart. Not even close. Neither was blackmail. There are things I liked about you, at least until you showed up here acting as though you owned me. I’m a human being with feelings, not a possession.”

Marc’s nostrils flared. “It’s him, isn’t it? He’s poisoned you against me.”

Are you fucking kidding me? What happened to accountability?

“Marc, you did that all by yourself. Blackmailing me to make you popular and to fuck you pretty much turned me against you. You showing up here was just the final straw. No one gets rough with me. Not anymore. I’m not that scared girl you used to know.”

“If you don’t come back to me, I’ll tell the world about your night terrors and how fucked up you are in the head.”

I unwillingly flinched. Marc hit my soft spot, and he knew it. “Go for it. And I’ll share all over TikTok, Instagram, Twitter, and every social media platform I can use and tell all the ladies how small your dick is.” I held up my pinky. “Pretty sure you won’t have dates or sex for a long time.”

I refrained from laughing as Marc’s face turned beet red. “Here’s how this is going to play out. You’re leaving today. If I find out you’ve opened your mouth or are still on campus, it won’t end well for you.” I stood, glowering at him. “I have an entire football team at my disposal, and once I tell them you’re trying to hurt Kane and me, they’ll fucking bury you alive. If you ask me, that’s a shitty way to die.” I smirked at him. “At least you wouldn’t be able to talk anymore, though.”

I grabbed my purse and slipped the strap over my shoulder. “Goodbye, Marc.” Waltzing out of the library, I nearly jumped with joy. I had finally stood up to Marc on my own, and it felt amazing to take control of my life. Giggling, I ran out of the building and into the rain.

“I’m free!” I bolted down the sidewalk with my arms spread as people stared at me like I’d lost my mind. I had. For the first time in my life, I couldn’t care less what people thought of me. If Marc wanted to push the limits, I was ready for him, and so was the society. Kane had already spoken to them about handling Marc. I spun around, the rain soaking my skin as I raised my face to the sky.

“What are you doing?” Kane yelled at me from the other side of the lawn. He ran toward me, the water splashing up from the ground with each step.

“Celebrating!” I giggled as he caught up and wiped the raindrops from my cheeks. “It felt so good to stand up to Marc on my own, Kane. Thank you for trusting me.”
