Kane took my hand, then knelt in front of me.

“What’s happening?” I asked him in a hushed tone.

“Brie, the first time I laid eyes on you, we were younger than Conner. Over the years, we became best friends, then fell in love. Not a day has gone by that you weren’t on my mind and in my heart. This time, I won’t let you go. Fate brought us together, or maybe it was our love for each other that remained strong. Through all the pain and chaos, we found each other again. I love you more than I’ll ever be able to articulate. The only thing that would make me happier is to call you, my wife. Marry me, Brie.”

Conner raced forward, his big brown eyes wide. “Here, Daddy.”

“Thanks, bud.” Kane released my hand, then opened a little black box Conner handed him. The large pear-shaped diamond caught the light, sparkling.

My gaze traveled from the ring to Kane’s face, my soul so full of emotion that I was having difficulty talking. Everyone grew silent as they stared at me, waiting for my answer.

“Yes. A million times yes, Kane. I would love to be your wife.”

The room erupted in cheers as everyone clapped. Kane slipped the white-gold ring on my finger, then stood.

“I love you, baby.” He tucked my hair behind my ear, then laid a searing kiss on me in front of all our friends and family. “Everything that is good in me is because of you.”

“I love you, too, Kane. Thank you for never giving up on me.” I couldn’t wait to take his last name and begin the next chapter of our lives together. Kane had saved my life, then he saved my heart. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I realized that my past had broken me but had also given me the greatest gift of all. Love that lasted a lifetime.
