“Did you? Did they make you have sex?” My tummy flip-flopped faster than a fish out of water.

Kane pursed his lips together. “I’ll tell you this last part, then we take a break.”

“Okay.”

“The night we tried to escape, you were going to be the girl tied down and raped, and since I was the youngest, I would have been the last guy to be with you. What they didn’t know was that you weren’t a virgin. If they had found out, they would’ve killed you. It’s why we ran.”

Tears streamed down my cheeks. “You saved me,” I whispered.

“I loved you. We had already been together, and you were my everything. Brie, you made life tolerable in the compound. If they had killed you, it would have been my fault.” Kane wiped the moisture from his eyes.

“You got me out, though.” My lip trembled as sorrow sucked me in like a whirlpool in the middle of the sea. Kane had sacrificed everything … for me. He loved me enough to risk his life. I stared at the sandwich growing cold on my plate, realizing that our trauma connected us in a strange climate of trust and vulnerability.

“Are you okay?” Kane leaned forward.

I ignored his question. “How did you get out? If I left you behind, what happened? Did you try to escape again?”

Kane released a heavy, tormented sigh. “The FBI came in one night when everyone was asleep. Some of the leaders were shot, but most of the women and children were rescued. A girl by the name of Tabitha let them know where I was. In a way, she was the one that saved me.”

“What do you mean? Were you in a jail or something?” My pulse skipped a beat as I waited for his answer.

He wet his lower lip before he answered. “Worse.”

“What could be worse than everything you told me?”

“I’m sorry, Brie. I’ll answer more questions later, but not right now.”

I slumped in my chair. “I understand. But there are a million questions swirling around in my brain.”

“I can only imagine, but for now, let’s get out of here. You might want to swap out your shorts for jeans and grab a jacket.”

My eyes narrowed at him. “Where are you taking me?” Shoving all the darkness out of my head, I focused on the man that had sacrificed himself for me. He’d shown me love in its purest form, unselfish and fearless. How could I not fall for Kane now that I felt a connection and knew who he really was?

“It’s a surprise, but a good one.” He stood, then collected our paper plates and tossed them in the trash.

“Let me change. I’ll be right back.” I hurried down the hall. At least I had already showered, but I suspected Kane wasn’t too comfortable since he’d only put his jeans back on. I’d laughed when he’d shoved his boxer briefs in his jacket pocket.

Ten minutes later, Kane pulled away from my house.

“I like your Jag.” I ran my fingertips over the supple, black leather seats. “Did you want one, or was it a gift?”

Kane kept his attention on the road in front of him. “It was a graduation present, but it was also a congratulatory gift for receiving a football scholarship.”

“I’m not surprised you got a scholarship. You’re incredible on the field.” I offered him a smile, still sifting through what he’d told me earlier. Instead of asking more questions, I made myself focus on our conversation.

“You watch me?”

“Why would you be shocked? I mean, as soon as I started Whitmore, the cheerleaders filled me in on the football players to stay away from, and the good guys, too.”

Kane chuckled. “Which category do I fall in?”

I smirked at him. “Who said they even talked about you? Maybe I watch you because you’re the quarterback and have the ball a lot.”

Kane’s smile faltered. “Oh.”

My giggle filled the car. “I’m messing with you. You were the first one they dished about. Apparently, you’re deliciously hot and sweet, or some shit like that.” I bit my lip, stifling my snicker.

“I’m not always the nice guy. It’s just who people see when they don’t know me well. Pretty sure Anderson, Quinn, and a few others could tell you the same. Especially lately.” He eyed me.
