“Looks like it’s time to start. Before you know it, we’ll be into the game and forget how cold it is.” I flashed them a smile, my pulse kicking up as Kane was introduced. Shaking my pom-poms, I cheered loudly for him along with the other cheerleaders.

“Girl, what am I missing here?” Gabby asked, flashing me a devious grin.

My forehead creased. Gabby must have caught me staring at Kane for too long. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.” I wondered if I could play it off. I didn’t think we were ready to announce we were together. At least, not until after Monday. If I stay with him after his big reveal.Surely, Kane was underestimating me. I shoved the worry aside, then focused on the game.

“Apparently, we need to have a little chitchat, Brie Langston.” Gabby eyed me. “You’re not getting off that easily … oh, or are you?” She wiggled her brows at me.

I tried to hide my smirk, but my facial muscles betrayed me.

“Oh, hell. Mm, girl, you’re fired for not sharing the juicy details with me.” Gabby stared at me with her hand on her hip, missing the cue for our next cheer.

“Shit.” She jumped into the routine, plastering a broad smile on her face, all while shooting me playful dirty looks.

After the cheer was over, she closed the gap between us. “Dish, babe.”

“There’s nothing to say … yet. I’ll know more next week.” That was the truth. I hadn’t lied, but I wasn’t going to share with Gabby that I’d slept with him a few times, either. Not here, while the game was happening.

“That’s a really odd thing to say, but okay. Make no mistake, Iwillfind out what’s going on.” She nudged my side and quirked a brow at me.

“I’ll tell you later, just not here.”

The announcer began to speak, breaking up our conversation.

“Whitmore University is honored to have one of the best teams in its history on the field tonight,” the first announcer, Chuck, said.

“That’s right, Chuck. Not only is the defense tight, but the visiting team has had a great year as well.”

I listened as the men chatted back and forth while the visitors had the ball. From what I could tell, the coach was talking to Kane.

“Interception!” Chuck yelled.

I cringed with the volume of his excitement.

Our offense jogged onto the field and settled into position.

“Ladies, the scenery is amazing from here.” Everlee chewed on her thumbnail as her attention swept over the guys bending over at the forty-yard line.

I didn’t blame her one bit. It was all about the tight end.

“What do you girls think about Sterling? Or Quinn? Hell, just give me a buffet line, and I’ll sample them all.” Everlee slapped her leg as if she’d told the year’s best joke.

I barked out a laugh, then held my breath as Kane sent the football flying through the air in a long pass.

“Shit, shit, shit! Catch that ball, number eighty-eight!” I raised my pom-poms to my face and peeked over the top, watching the play unfold.

The crowd cheered and jumped to their feet as Quinn scored the first points.

“And a beautiful play to kick off the game!” Jim said, excitedly.

“Jim, hold on. While the touchdown happened, our star quarterback got sacked and is on the ground. We have a penalty flag for unnecessary roughness. My question? Is Kane Cooper hurt and out of the game?”

“What?” I ran to the edge of the field, trying to see what was happening, but the coaches and players were crowded around him, blocking my view.

The girls were hot on my heels, concern written all over their expressions. Gabby wrapped her arm around my shoulder. “He’s tough, Brie. He’ll be okay.”

“Remember when one of the quarterbacks a few years ago got tackled too hard? It broke his collarbone,” Everlee said, worry hanging onto her words.

“Are you serious?” My pitch rose with each syllable. I wasn’t hiding my feelings for Kane very well.
