“Wrong thing to say, Everlee.” Gabby frowned at her.

“I’m sorry. It was the first thing that popped into my head.” Everlee took my hand in hers. “Gabby’s right. He’s tough. Shit happens on the field all the time, and they get up and play.”

I held my breath, my heart hammering while we waited to see if he was okay. Clapping from the stands filled the stadium as Kane was escorted off the field and to the sidelines.

“I … I need to know if he’s okay. What if he has a concussion or a broken bone? What if it’s his arm?” Adrenaline pulsed through my veins. The only thing that mattered to me was Kane.

I hurried over to my coach. “Coach, are you able to learn if the quarterback has injuries?” I folded my arms over my chest, hoping she could help me.

“We’re not allowed over there with the players. You know the rules. I’m sorry.”

That wasn’t acceptable. I had to learn what happened, and the announcers weren’t saying anything. The other team had the ball, which gave Kane a few minutes, but …

“Okay. Thanks.” I hurried back to the cheer squad and grabbed my friends.

“I need your jacket, Everlee. I mean, please. Then I need you all to block Coach’s view.”

Everlee jogged to the stands and collected her jacket for me. “Here.”

“I have to talk to Kane.” I slipped on the coat. “Please help me.”

Gabby shot Everlee a look. “Then we need another girl to help block Coach’s view. Hang on.” Gabby hurried over to the end of the cheer line, then brought over Leighton.

“Hey, Brie. Gabby said you need to sneak over to Kane. I’m in. I’ll help. I need to know if he’s okay, and they aren’t saying a fucking word.”

I wasn’t quick enough to hide my surprise at what she said. Had Leighton and Kane hooked up?

“I didn’t realize you two were a thing.”Dammit, Brie. Shut up and check on him.

“I’ve not said anything to anyone.” Leighton offered a tightlipped smile.

Heat traveled up my neck and to my cheeks. What the actual fuck?

“Go check on him for us,” Gabby said, taking my arm and moving me forward.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to know if he was all right. In fact, if he and Leighton were getting together, I hoped his dick would fall off. Huffing, I did my best to stay concealed and made my way to the team.

“Excuse me. Is Kane okay? Is he hurt badly?”

“Ask him yourself. Hang on.” The tall, slender player stepped through his teammates. “Hey, QB, some hot-as-hell chick wants to know if you’re okay.”

I pursed my lips together, not appreciating how he’d referred to me. The players parted, then Kane met me at the sideline.

“Hey, Brie. I’m okay.”

“Are you sure? No broken bones? Will you be able to continue playing?” I controlled my anger at him. If he was hurt, I couldn’t publicly beat him for being with Leighton and me at the same time.

He closed the gap between us, tilted my chin, and pinned me with an intense gaze. “I’m fine. I promise. But I need something for good luck.”

My brows raised, then the entire world disappeared around me as he laid a searing kiss on my lips, completely ignoring that we were in public.

“Thank you for checking on me. If your coach gives you shit, I’ll try to back her down.” He kissed me again, then stepped away. “I’ve gotta go. I’ll see you after the game?”

Breathless and giddy, I nodded yes. Kane Cooper had just kissed me in front of his teammates and the cheerleaders. He wouldn’t have done that if he and Leighton were an item.

Forgetting that I was hiding from my coach, I jogged to my friends.

“He’s clearly okay,” Leighton snapped.
