“Leighton, I had no idea he was going to kiss me.”
“You sure? Looked like you two are together.” She stomped off in the other direction. As much as I wanted to comfort her because she was my friend, I had no clue what to say. I had been as shocked as she was.
I touched my lips, smiling to myself.
Gabby and Everlee stared at me. “Is Kane okay?” Gabby finally asked.
“Yeah, he’s going back into the game.” Then, it dawned on me that Gabby, Everlee, and Leighton had been best friends for years, and I was the new girl. “Are you two upset with me, too? I had no idea Kane would kiss me like that.”
“Girl, no. If we were upset over every time a guy we liked kissed another girl, we wouldn’t have any friends left. Leighton was just hoping. At the beginning of the year, she kissed Kane, and he kissed her back, but that was it. He never called her or made an attempt to date her,” Gabby explained.
A wave of calm settled over me. Kane hadn’t lied, but I was embarrassed to admit that I went from zero to bitch in ten seconds. Dating Marc for the last few years, I’d never dealt with jealousy. I wasn’t sure it was a good look on me. “Oh. Okay. I wouldn’t hurt her on purpose.”
“Girl, Leighton will be fine. We need to focus on the important things right now.” Everlee pulled on the sleeve of her jacket I was still wearing.
“I’m sorry. You’re freezing and need your coat. Thanks for letting me borrow it.” I started to remove it.
“Brie! I wasn’t talking about that. When did you and Kane become a thing? That’s what matters.” She clapped her hands.
“What she said,” Gabby laughed.
I sighed happily. “Yesterday, but there are a few things we need to talk about before we tell everyone. It’s why I didn’t say anything, yet.”
“By that kiss, well both kisses actually, I would say he was marking his territory for the world to see. So, you’d better hop on that train, girl. Not sure there’s anything else for you two to figure out,” Gabby said.
The announcer broke through our conversation, and we lined up as our guys jogged onto the field again. Kane looked in my direction, then focused on the play.
While we watched the rest of the game, I wondered if Kane had kissed me because the other football player had called me hot or if he was already comfortable with letting the world know about us. The only way to find out was to ask. Maybe he wasn’t the only one that had a bit of a jealous streak. At least I’d learned something new about myself. Don’t fuck with my man.

“Hey, beautiful.” Kane wrapped me in his strong arms outside the visitors’ locker room.
“I’m glad you’re okay.” I pushed up on my tiptoes, kissing him.
“Better than that. We kicked their ass.” He smiled at me.
“Another win for Whitmore.” I placed my hand on his chest, not minding that he was sweaty from the game. “I have a question.”
“Shoot.”
“Why did you kiss me in front of the team and … well, everyone on that side of the football field? Were you jealous because a guy called me hot?”
Kane’s brown eyes softened. “Did I embarrass you?”
“No. Not at all. You caught me off guard. I thought we were waiting until after Monday to let the world know.” I glanced away, slightly embarrassed that I’d asked him. Maybe I should have left it alone.
Kane placed his palm against my cheek. “If I did, that wasn’t my intention. I’ll try to slow down for you. It’s just … Brie, I’ve been in love with you since I was eleven.”
I gawked at him. “Really? “I mean, you talked to me about when we were fourteen and fifteen, but I didn’t realize it was before then. Plus, you’ve hated me for many years in between.” I smiled, letting him know that what I’d said wasn’t a jab. I was attempting to lighten the conversation.
Kane leaned down, kissing me gently. “Hate is love wrapped up in an ugly package.”
I sighed against his mouth. “You still didn’t answer my question.”
“Both. I did it because that asshole said you were hot, and I wanted to make sure there wasn’t a misunderstanding. If he’d touched you …” Kane’s teeth clenched.
I shook my head. “He didn’t. I wouldn’t have let him anyway.”
