I gaped at him. “Really?”

“I can’t be my best self without you by my side. It will mean moving. You’ll travel and probably finish your last year of college online, but you’ll have the other wives and girlfriends around, too. It will be a different life, but I want you with me, Brie.”

I didn’t have to think about it. We’d come this far to find each other again, and deep in my heart, I knew I wanted him and no one else. Plus, we had another year together before he was possibly drafted.

“Meeting new people, traveling, being with you … it sounds wonderful.”

Kane’s body relaxed even more. “I’m so relieved to hear you say that.”

All I could do was smile at him, reveling in our moment together. For the first time, my life seemed absolutely perfect.

As Coach strolled in, I sat on the locker room bench with the other team members.

“Great practice, guys, but don’t get cocky. Yes, we’re undefeated and over halfway through the season. Which means that every game over the next few weeks will determine if you play for the championship.”

We all roared, claiming victory and stomping our shoes on the concrete floor.

Coach laughed, then quieted us down. “Stay focused. Don’t get too sure of yourself; that’s when the mistakes happen, and shit goes south. Keep those grades up and stay out of trouble. We’ve not clenched the title yet.”

“Yes, sir, Coach!” we all said in unison.

“Have a hell of a day.” Coach gave us a small wave before he left and headed to his office.

“Hey, man, you’ve not been around the society much,” Quinn said, sitting next to me. “Everything all right?”

“Yeah, just been busy with other stuff. I assume everything is fine, or you would have told me.”

“It’s all good. After the shit Jimmy pulled, no one wants to cross you or step out of line.”

I stood, then closed my locker door. “Good, let’s keep it that way.”

Quinn rubbed his shoulder, a quizzical expression on his face. “So, you and Brie Langston, huh? I mean, the whole world saw you kiss her at the game a few weeks ago. I’m guessing that’s who is keeping you busy and away from the society.” He shot me a playful smirk.

“Pretty much.” I grabbed my backpack off the bench, then hauled it over my shoulder. “It’s different but good. We’ve worked out a lot of shit.”

“Definitely looks like it. Well, if you think this is like ‘the one’”—Quinn added air quotes—“then you might want to start thinking about who you’re going to pass the mantle to at the society. You’ve got the place running pretty damn well since you dealt with Jimmy. Maybe you could continue to lead but have Brie in the rooms with you. I mean, we lost Calloway last year. If we change leadership again, that’s gonna suck.”

“I get it, but we will all eventually graduate, so shit will change anyway. I’ve got one year left, and if Brie agrees to what you’re suggesting, then I’ll consider it.”

“Calloway could have done that, but I think Teagan wasn’t on board. He was pussy-whipped.” Quinn shook his head, bewildered.

I chuckled. “You’ll understand when you find the one, man. In the meantime, keep an eye on things, and let me know if there are any concerns.”

“Anything you need, boss.” The corner of his mouth kicked up.

I walked to Coach’s office, chewing on what Quinn had mentioned. I’d been so wrapped up in reconnecting with Brie that the society hadn’t even crossed my mind. He was right, though. I needed to figure out what to do. I rapped my knuckles on Coach’s door, then poked my head in. “Busy?”

“Come on in.” He waved me forward.

I closed the door behind me, then sank into the chair in front of his desk.

“What can I do for you, son?”

“Just wanted to say hi. See how Mom and Alexandria were after dinner last week.” I stretched my legs out, my jeans rustling with the movement.
