I nearly crumpled to the floor with the news, then it registered in my brain that they hadn’t mentioned Brie.

“Is Brie—is she?” I stammered.

“The young lady is in our custody. She’s unharmed,” another man responded.

I knelt, my shoulders shaking with my silent cries.Jesus. I’d almost lost her for good.

Picking myself up, I pulled myself together. “When can I see her?”

“We’re on the way,” the man replied.

Without asking, I slid the van door open and hopped out. I felt as though I were suffocating.

A few minutes later, a car drove up, and Brie jumped out and ran to me. She threw her arms around my neck, and I lifted her, her legs automatically locking around my waist.

“I thought I’d lost you,” I cried into her hair.

Her cries wracked her body. “Me, too. I was so scared. Then … then he just dropped to the ground. When I turned, there was a bullet hole in his forehead. It whizzed right over me.”

“You’re safe now, baby. It’s over. Wagner’s gone. No way would they let him kidnap you again.”

I held Brie until her tears calmed, then gently set her feet down. “You were fucking amazing.” Tucking her hair behind her ear, I leaned down and kissed her. “I think you should consider acting.”

“Excellent work, Brie,” Pierce said, joining us. “I’m sorry one of my men had to take him out while he was holding you, but we didn’t have a choice. We were ready to go with a sniper, then the FBI gave the order. I’m grateful that you were able to get him to confess, and we have what we need to go after the other elders that are still in prison. We’ll bait them, and I think they’ll confess when they’re told that Wagner rolled over on them. His death will remain quiet until the FBI has the other confessions.”

“Thank you. I hope the bastards get the chair and rot in hell for stealing little kids.” She folded her arms over her chest, anger and fear flashing in her gaze.

There was the fire that I loved.

Brian approached us, his attention landing on Brie. “If you ever want a job working undercover for the FBI, Pierce has my number.”

Hell. Fucking. No.

Brie released a nervous giggle. “If Kane is offered a spot with the NFL, I’ll be busy traveling with him during his football season, but I’ll let you know if I change my mind.”

I slipped my arm around her waist, pulling her closer.

“Thank you for taking care of him. And coaching me. I was scared to death.” She rubbed her arms, shivering.

“Of course. Let’s get Brie debriefed, then home,” Pierce said, patting me on the back. “I suspect you two are ready to call it a day.”

“Pierce?” Brie asked.

He turned his attention to her.

“Is this what you and Sutton do? I mean, I understand that you provide security, but you work with the FBI and take down the bad guys like today?”

Pierce’s brown eyes grew thoughtful. “Pretty much.” He offered her a kind smile.

I had a feeling there was a lot more behind his answer.

It was nearly ten in the evening when Brie and I arrived at her place. We both had called our parents, updating them about Wagner. They had no idea Brie had agreed to work with the FBI, so it was a lot to explain. Even though I understood their frustration that we hadn’t shared beforehand, Brie and I had realized it would be better to wait. We were stressed enough without adding our parents to the mix.

“I’ve never been so happy to see this little house as I am right now.” She punched in the code for the alarm, then slipped off her tennis shoes. “Check the fridge. I had one of Gabby’s friends pick up some drinks to have on hand.”

I locked the door behind us, then removed my shoes.
