“Is that what you want?” His tone was dangerously low and laced with hurt. We stared deeply into each other’s eyes as we both heaved breathlessly. No, that wasn’t what I wanted. Right now, all I wanted was him. His lips on mine. My lust was clouding my judgement once again.

In a flash, he had given in first. He grabbed my face in his huge hands and smashed his lips against mine possessively and with all the fire that burned within him. It was wanting, angry and raw as he forced his tongue into my mouth and claimed my soul. I moaned, my body melting against his as he lifted me onto the kitchen top so we were at an even height. My hands grabbed at his hair, pulling it and fisting it aggressively as his hands explored my back, groped my breast aggressively through my top and then wrapped around my neck, holding me to him. Every movement was a power struggle between us mixed with intense passion and feeling.

“Say you’re mine Liv,” he breathed against my open mouth and my senses snapped me back to reality. What was I doing? I pulled back from him and he stared at me with hooded eyes.

“I – I can’t,” I whispered, trying to push at his chest to give me some space. He held onto me tighter.

“Do you fear me, Liv? Do you believe I would ever let anything happen to you?” he growled, and I held his gaze.

“No. I don’t, but that doesn’t change anything.”

“That changes everything, Olivia.”

“It does not! You are still who you are! You will still do what you do and I just have to look the other way? I don’t know if I can do that!” I shouted, matching his tone. I shoved him harder and jumped off the counter. This time he didn’t try to stop me.

I paced the small kitchen floor as he sighed heavily. There was nothing he could say about that. It was true and he knew it. The silence stretched between us and every second that passed made me feel sadder than the last. This could never work.

“I can’t let you go,” his haunted voice whispered, breaking the silence. My heart flipped and tears sprang to my eyes. I can’t do this right now. I needed time to process. Time to think. He was too confusing. His words, his actions, his beautiful face. He didn’t seem like a ruthless killer to me, yet I knew he was.

“I need you to go,” I choked, and he turned to stare at me. The look in his eyes nearly broke me.

“Bambola, please. Just come with me. You don’t even need to see me. I will stay away from you, I just need to keep you safe,” he pleaded. I nearly gave in. Those eyes nearly had me.

I shook my head. “I need space. I need time alone, Gio. Please.”

His jaw flexed and his features tensed with irritation. He closed his eyes and exhaled before turning abruptly and storming out of the flat. I stared at the slammed door before I crumbled to the floor as a sudden wave of despair crashed over me. I couldn’t be mad at anyone but myself. I told myself not to fall in love with him. If only I had listened.

Olivia

Iwas pacing the length of the small flat with my burner phone in hand and biting my nails for what felt like eternity. The conflict of emotions inside me was threatening to deplete me and I needed to talk to the one person who had always been there for me and would know what to say. Millie.

But if I called her, I was risking everything. I was putting her life in danger as well as my own. I had never felt more alone. But what if I destroy the burner later?

Allowing the sudden impulsivity and the need to speak to my best friend to take over, I dialled her number and let it ring three times before hanging up. That was the signal. Now I just had to wait. If she wanted to talk to me, she would find a pay phone and ring my burner.

It was nearly half an hour before the phone started vibrating. My heart was pounding my chest as I inhaled a shaky breath. A mix of excitement and nerves swirled in my belly.

I answered the call without speaking, just to be sure it was her.

“Liv?”

Her voice felt like home and the tears were already rolling down my cheeks as I released a loud sob of happiness. “Mills!”

“Oh my god Liv! Thank God you are alright. I miss you so much! You have no idea! Are you alright though? Where are you? Oh shit no don’t tell me that. I am just so happy to hear your voice.”

I laughed through my tears at her rambling as my heart swelled. “I’m alright. I miss you too. I just needed to speak to you. I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t have called.” Panic started to fester in me as I realised the magnitude of this action.

“It is fine. I had to borrow a random colleague's phone to make an urgent phone call, saying my battery had died. You will still need to destroy your burner after.” Her tone was serious and I smiled. She was always the bossy one between us. “I know you can’t tell me much, but are you well? You aren’t sleeping on the streets or anything?”

I chuckled. “No, I am good. I have a flat and a job. I am fine.”

There was a pause. “Why do I sense that you are not then?”

I sighed deeply. Even after not seeing her for a few months, she still knew me better than anyone. “I’ve… met someone. A man.”

My gut was telling me she was smiling through the phone. “That’s great Liv! You deserve to be happy.”
