“Um, can you give me a ride this afternoon? Lulah can’t get out here to pick me up,” he said.

“Sure,” Jo said.

“If you don’t want to, or if you’re busy, I can call Bobbie,” he said. “Or I can just drive myself.” Now, that plain pissed her off. He was acting like an ass, and she was done with it.

“First,” she said, pointing her finger into his massive chest, “you’re not allowed to drive anywhere. And second, I already told you that I was fine with driving you, dumbass,” she growled. He pulled her hand against his chest and she knew that she had made a critical error.

“I like it when you’re sassy,” he said. “I’m sorry that I made you cry the other day, and I’m sorry that I lied to my sisters.” Jo wasn’t sure what to say to his admissions. They were almost too much for her to hear.

“I’ll get a ride there and meet you,” he said, taking his sister off of speaker. “Yeah, three works for me. Okay, see you there,” he said, ending the call. He was still holding her hand against his chest and she wasn’t sure if she should pull it free or leave it.

“Where are we going today at three?” she almost whispered. The heat of his touch felt like it ran up her arm and she suddenly felt way too hot.

“I need a ride to my supposed grandmother’s house,” he said.

“Supposed?” she asked.

“Yeah, the other day, at my brother-in-law’s office, I found out that my good-for-nothing father is dead,” he said.

“Oh, Stone, I’m so sorry,” she said. “That’s awful.”

“Not really,” he said, “I never planned on seeing that guy ever again, not with what he did to my mom and me. But I feel bad for my sisters,” he said. “They seemed to have their hearts set on getting some answers. Austin tracked down a woman who might be David’s mom, so I guess that would make her my grandmother if it all pans out.”

“How do you feel about having a grandmother?” she asked.

“Well, we all have grandmothers, I just never knew either of mine. My mom’s mom died when she was just a little girl and my father lied and said that he had no family,” Stone said.

“I’m sorry that happened to you,” she said, “but, you have your sister’s now and possibly, a grandmother. Focusing on what you have now might help you through all of this.”

“I thought that you are a physical therapist, not a psychiatrist,” he grumbled.

“I’m just wise beyond my years,” she teased.

“And modest,” he mumbled, “don’t forget modest.” She giggled and slapped at his arm like a damn schoolgirl. What was it about Stone that made her act like a giddy teenager?

“Are you sure that you don’t mind driving me out to meet this woman?” he asked.

“It’s fine,” she said. She wanted to ask him if they were good, but Stone hobbled away from her, not giving her the chance.

“I’m going to get dressed and I’ll be ready in a few,” he said.

“I’ll meet you downstairs,” Jolene offered. She could wait to get her answers from him. When she had him trapped in her car, she’d be able to ask him all her questions and hopefully, he’d be in a mood to answer them.

Stone

Stone knew that they needed to settle everything that happened between the two of them. He acted like an ass and even though he tried to apologize, he did a shitting job of it. And hiding away in his room really wasn’t his finest moment. He was an idiot but there was something about Jo that made him lose his damn mind.

“I think that we need to talk,” he said.

“You beat me to the punch,” Jolene breathed. “I agree—we need to talk.”

“Let me go first,” he said. “I’m sorry that I told my sisters that you were just my therapist,” he said. “I don’t want you to be just my therapist, Jo. I liked kissing you in my kitchen.” He more than liked it. If he wasn’t recovering from a gunshot wound, he would have carried her up to his bedroom and taken everything that she was willing to give to him and beg her for more.

“If I’m being honest, I liked kissing you too, Stone,” she admitted. Hearing her say that gave him so much damn hope. “But it wasn’t professional of me,” she insisted. He didn’t give a fuck about professionalism.

“I don’t care about that shit,” he growled. “I’d really love to throw our professional relationship out the window, but I still need your help so that’s going to be impossible. Give me a chance though, Jolene,” he begged. He wasn’t above begging her for more if that was what it took to get Jo in his bed.

“A chance at what?” she asked.
